KENINGAU: Assistant Rural Development Minister Datuk Haji Sairin Karno said a study on national health and morbidity last year showed 2.6 million or 15.2 per cent of Malaysians aged 18 years and above, had diabetes.
He said 5.8 million or 32.7 per cent had high blood pressure and 6.2 million or 35.1 per cent had high cholesterol levels
“What is disturbing is that these diseases are sometimes inherent in an individual without them realizing it,” he said when opening a health carnival at the sports complex here, yesterday.
His text, which was read by Liawan People Development Leader Rosdi Padiman, said these diseases could be prevented by practising a simple healthy lifestyle.
Sairin said based on similar studies in 2006 and 2011, the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases had increased.
