Ten thousand more GPs are needed for the NHS to cope with its increasing workload and ensure patients are properly cared for out of hours, the head of the Royal College of GPs has said.

Family doctors may in future play a greater role in providing care for their patients outside normal office hours, in what would be a return to the pre-2004 system, Dr Clare Gerada said.

Dr Gerada was speaking at a round table event on the future of general practice hosted by the British Medical Journal.

GPs were allowed to opt out of providing direct care for their patients outside office hours in the 2004 contract in return for a an average drop in practice income of ?6,000 per year.

Local primary care trusts took over responsibility and in many cases private companies were hired but there were increasing numbers of complaints and high profile cases where patients have died.
