Hi all - hope you are all keeping safe and occupied during this crazy time in our lives.
As stated I'm the dad of a 9yr old with T1 - been ahuge learning curve and still learning to deal with the frustrations of thinking you've got a handle on the daily ups n downs. At the start of this journey some-one said something about nailing jelly to a wall.. Very appropriate!
Daughter is now on the Dexcom G6 and self funded ( ouch!) but its an amazing bit of kit when it works and doesn't report no data in the middle of the night when she rolls over and lies on it. the science behind all this is incredible and I had no knowledge of diabetees when she was diagnosed. She is also on the Omnipod which we are well pleased with as well

Hats off to anyone who has it or ,like me, is a parent trying their darned best to keep that blood sugar level as steady as possible.
Amazed how much trouble we had with the school when it was first diagnosed, Basically an attitude of ignorance and not treating it seriously enough. We've since sold up and moved to a new place and a school who really get it, due to a TA having someone in her family with it. She gives us huge confidence as does the medical team looking after her.
In the early days we all really suffered from info overload and burnout from talking about it constantly, it ended up putting huge strain on relationships within the home as the level of expectation and constant need to get things right, took its toll. one year in we are still learning and battling but feel in a much better place. Hence why I thought I'd join this community and see if I can help or learn from others.

Welcome to the forum @RichDave, glad that you have found us. I know that I have learnt most what I know about my management from others on here and it is always good to have parents with us, so pleased that you have joined. Your analogy of nailing jelly to the wall is a perfect one, and made me chuckle. Just when you think it is secure, it will just slide off the nail and sometimes make a right old mess afterwards.

It sounds like you have got your head round things quickly, as well as recognising that Diabetes just doesn’t behave logically at times. So all that any of us can do is do the best that we can, tweaking basal rates, counting carbs as accurately as we can and all the other things that it throws at us. It is great to read that your daughter is finding the Omnipod effective with the dexcom. There are so many options available now, and I am guessing from your comments about lying on the sensor that she had used a Libre before!

I was diagnosed a lot later (at 53) but even then found the book Type1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas very useful. It is so clearly explained and a reliable well indexed reference book for so many things.

This lockdown is affecting people’s Diabetes management is different ways. How is it impacting your daughter? I have found carb counting is better since we are not going out at all, the exercise regime is more consistent, so that should all help, but then as we know D doesn’t behave itself!!

Keep in touch.

Hi good to see you. My daughter is now 10 and has been diagnosed for a little over a year too. The first 6 months were very difficult but we’re pretty settled with it all now. It’s constantly changing as she grows though.

Oh 'eck - new schools soon coupled with female hormones, for both of you. Oh what fun! Never a relaxing time for any parent anyway …...

We manage to survive though and lead (what we hope are) useful lives with your early guidance in everything so thank you for everything until we have the wisdom of age ourselves to realise we should have said that to you!

Welcome to the forum @RichDave

Sorry to hear about your daughter, but you seem to be getting to grips with it brilliantly, and great that you have access to CGM so soon.

Good to hear about the new school. Hope it works out well when they reopen.

Glad to have you here 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum @Spook 🙂
