Type 1.5 LADA
Morning!

I am a newly diagnosed T1.5 and at the minute I’m on sitagliptin but no insulin but I have a libre 2 fitted. When I was admitted to hospital my bloods were 80. I’m doing low carb at the min but trying to incorporate more as advised by the hospital. My results are so up and down and just really inconsistent

One thing I’ve noticed is a 1.30am wake up, every night without fail. It’s not always low bg but I generally wake up, need a wee or something like that. It doesn’t matter how much or little I drink before bed either. Any idea what it is or if there is any way I could prevent it happening?

Welcome @Hughes87 🙂 What are your blood sugars like? Is there any reason why you’re not on insulin?

Do you fingerprick to test your blood sugar when you wake in the night? If your blood sugar has been high for a while, sometimes normal sugars feel like lows to your body, so perhaps it’s going through a period of re-adjustment.

Generally I’m between 3.8-12.5 and there’s no rhyme or reason some days. Obviously I’m low carb but on the day I went to hospital, my fasting bg was nearly 14.

At 1.30am my bg is anywhere between 4.4 and 9.8. I tend to have a later dinner or if it’s before 7 I have a snack before bed but again it’s usually something like a couple of keto protein balls. I only weigh 7 stone and my evening meals tend to be very balanced and full of veggies, I barely drink caffeine

I added a bit to my post above @Hughes87 I’m wondering why you were diagnosed as LADA rather than Type 1? Type 1 does come on more slowly in adults and it’s not unusual to be diagnosed with it in your 30s, or 40s or 50s or… - you get the idea!

Sorry. Forgot to reply to that bit!

To be honest, I have no idea. I went in to hospital in November and didn’t get my results until after Christmas as all of my results were inconclusive. They made the decision based on my c-peptide results, at the time they were 430/440. So I still have some insulin, it’s just on the low side of normal. I think they range was around 330/340-1800

The last consultant I seen said he didn’t like the term LADA so would be referring to it as t1 so I have both on my letters. Little bit confusing.

They have given me emergency insulin for the fridge but said if I need it, call them and they can guide me through how to use it

Also - I’m 35

That’s interesting @Hughes87 My consultant rarely diagnoses people as LADA (usually only a few people over 55 or similar age).

If you can’t eat a normal diet, then it sounds like you might be better off on a small amount of insulin. More than that, early introduction of insulin can help preserve your remaining beta cells longer.

Thank you. I will get in touch with them because while I don’t mind low carb, long term I don’t think it’s good really

No, i mean, no bread! I did low carb for about a year and found i was needing more insulin (1 was 1 unit insulin to 3.5 carbs). Back on carbs and i have a ratio 1 to 10!
Plus, may as well get into the insulin whilst ypu body can help out, may help externd the honeymoon period
