Sanofi SA and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals let out an experimental drug that has shown promising results in effectively lowering “bad” cholesterol among people. The effectiveness can be seen even when the drug was administered once every four weeks, rather than the usual dose of once every two weeks. The drug is part of an emerging class of injectable drugs and is called alirocumab.
Alirocumab blocks PCSK9, which is protein that naturally occurs in the body, and prevents the liver from releasing “bad” cholesterol. The aim of the drug is to help lower cholesterol for those patients whose cholesterol levels cannot be brought to normal levels using other medications and lifestyle changes. This drug is also commonly used for those patients who are unable to tolerate strong doses of statins like Pfizer Inc’s Lipitor.
