Rachel Clarke, a one-time TV journalist, decided to retrain as a doctor. Now 44, she tells Chloe Hamilton about her anguish about going on strike last year and what she thinks of Jeremy Hunt

“Every junior doctor knows another junior doctor who has either taken their own life or has come very close,” Dr Rachel Clarke’s voice shakes.

I’m meeting the journalist- turned-junior doctor to talk about her first book, Your Life in My Hands, which documents the realities of life as a junior doctor against the backdrop of last year’s historic strikes.

“There are a lot of people who talk the talk about looking after juniors, protecting them, nurturing them, making sure that they don’t come to harm. But clearly that isn’t working.”

Dr Clarke has been a vocal critic of the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, since his new “seven-day” junior doctors’ contract was proposed in 2015.

Have just bought her book 🙂

This will get worse after Brexit. The NHS in England has never got to grips with the working hours directive, which is an EU law. It doesn't bother Scottish hospitals, or any health services in Europe. After Brexit, you can be sure this is one of the laws that will be abandoned.

You aint seen nothing yet
