Hundreds of millions of pounds will be spent by hospitals this summer clearing an operations backlog that in some cases that stretches back over a year.

Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, is setting aside £250million to pay for 100,000 extra treatments over the summer.

He will pledge that people will no longer have to face unacceptable waits of more than a year for NHS treatment unless it is clinically necessary.

In a speech, he will praise hospital staff for cutting the number of these very “long waiters” from 18,458 to 574 in four years.

He will pledge that this list will be cleared this summer, and also help patients who have been waiting more than 18 weeks for an operation.

Is there an election coming up? 🙄
