Hi Everyone
please could someone help me, as you all probably know this time of year brings with it the joys of cold, flu n various bugs!! Im starting with the cold/flu but do not know if I can take any of the powders, tablets or syrups because I know the majority of them have sugar in them!! Can anyone recommend which are the "better" ones to take?
TIA

I don't I'm afraid, but wanted to mention that you should always get your yearly flu jab. Just ask your GP practice. They should always organise one.

Andy 🙂

I go mainly for paracetomol, if I am really ill I go for the lemsip, short term it shouldn't matter too much I think paracetamol is 0 carbs, you can always check the carb content on any item by reading the back of label or check on line.

Lemsip:

Each sachet contains approximately 2.3 g of carbohydrate. Due to its aspartame content this product should not be given to patients with phenylketonuria. This medicinal product contains 118.39mg sodium per sachet, equivalent to 5.92% of the WHO recommended maximum daily intake of 2g sodium for an adult.
Active Ingredients: Mg/Sachet
Paracetamol: 1000.00
Phenylephrine hydrochloride*: 12.20

I'm one that just puts up with it I'm afraid xx

Being ill in can make your Blood Sugar rise anyway.

Exactly my thinking @grovesy

If I’ve got a cold bad enough to want Lemsips etc, then my BG will almost certainly be a bit out of whack anyway and I’ve never thought that the 2.3g of carbs makes any noticeable difference.

I tend to opt for flu capsules during the day - I don’t think those have got sugar or sweeteners in them.

not as far as I'm aware but most contain caffeine so if sensitive it may be best to avoid them too xx

Bit of advice in this area, as I ran out of lemsip anyway. Try squeezing the juice of a lemon into a cup of hot water, then add about a spoon and a bit of stevia. Then take two paracetamol along with it. Tastes and acts exactly as lemsip (seriously, tastes a little better because the stevia is finer granules than the sugar they put in lemsip). Figured I had some lemons anyway, so why not!

Luckily I don’t suffer from many colds but last year I had two absolute stinkers and had a concert to go to. So I got the Solpedine Max capsules just to get me through the concert. They worked in so much I didn’t have to blow my nose every 5 seconds but once I stopped taking them it started again but worse! I would just ride it out and take paracetamol. You can get sugar free Strepsils if you have a scratchy throat but they are blooming horrible! :(
