Hi all ,

Just recently come out of hospital after going in with ketoacidosis.

Been put on Humulin m3. My BG readings are really high all. All my muscles have gone stiff and feel like I ran a marathon all the time.
Anyone else experienced this?

Firstly @x13roger welcome to the forum
I can't answer your question directly, but I'm sure someone will come along with some help and advice

Take care
Alan 😉

Hello @x13roger, so sorry you’re experiencing some spikes in your BG. Have you tried the taking humulin m3 as prescribed? It may be really helpful discussing this with your DSN. Also, I’m sure someone here will share their ideas/experiences soon.
Best wishes

Hi @x13roger and welcome to the forum - we have numerous members here living with type 3c Diabetes - I'm sure a few will pop along shortly with some help and advice (I can't find my list I wrote down or I would have tagged them lol) - glad you have found us

Yes I was put on lantus twice a day and almost immediately switched to Humulin. Was started on 10 twice a day. After 2 weeks the Nurse rang and upped it to 16. Seems any carbs sends it up way too high.

Lantus is a basal insulin which deals with the glucose released by the liver but not with carbs in the food you eat so that is likely why the change to a mixed insulin which has both the basal insulin which is slow acting plus a medium speed insulin which deals with the carbs in your meals but and it is a big but people need to eat a certain amount of carbs for the insulin dose amount. Were you told how many carbs to have for each meal?
It is early day so they are probably being cautious about your dose.
Are you also taking Creon or other pancreatic enzymes but that may depend on the cause of your Type 3c.
It would be more usual to have a basal insulin like Lantus and a fast acting insulin to have for meals or which there are several.

Hi and welcome from me too.

Can you tell us a bit about how you came to your Type 3c diagnosis? I am assuming you have some sort of damage to your pancreas.
You mention in your other post that you are just recovering from DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis) and have been moved from Lantus to Humulin 3 mixed insulin. Was any particular reason given why they changed you to a mixed insulin.
You also mention that your BG levels are very high still in your other post. How high and have you been given advice about increasing your insulin doses or is the nurse contacting you regularly to discuss your levels and suggest dose adjustments?

Do you have a Constant Glucose Monitoring system (CGM) like Libre or Dexcom or are you just finger pricking to get readings at the moment?

Do you have Creon or other pancreatic enzyme supplement prescribed to take with meals?

Managing diabetes with insulin has a steep learning curve in the early days/weeks/months and Type 3c can be particularly tricky. The more info you can give us about your situation the more people will be able to relate to your situation and give you more appropriate input.

I will tag a few regular Type 3c members, who will no doubt be along to say hello and compare notes. @soupdragon, @Wendal @Proud to be erratic

In the mean time, if you can provide a bit more detail about your diagnosis ie how long you have been diagnosed with diabetes, what problem you have experienced with your pancreas to make it Type 3c and if you are using Creon, that will all help.

No other hormones/enzymes just b12.
Like you say early days. Not seen a dietitian or anything.
I'm feeling it though, I'm between 14 and 20 BG most of the time!

Hi. I have responded to your other post, but reading this I am wondering (hoping) if they have given you a means of testing for ketones? These might be Ketostix to dip in your urine or blood ketone strips that go in a special dual purpose BG meter?

You have two threads going so check the other one for replies as well otherwise there will be crossed posts.

I went in because of stopping drinking alcohol. Had pancreatitis dka and pneumonia all at the same time. Also malnutrition. The nurse looked at my bloods and showed me my pancreas is only working about 50%.
No advice other than twice a day 30mins before food.

My readings are between 14 and 21 highest peak around midday. I'm using libre 2+ now .

I was diagnosed 6 years ago as type 2 and put on metformin. No testing apart from yearly.

Goodness what an ordeal @x13roger - sounds like diabetes hit you like a train! :( :( :(

Well done on giving up the booze - such a brilliant thing to do.

What is it you do twice a day 30 mins before food?

Are you on insulin? And do you take creon?

I'll try to stick the this thread

Yes on Humulin 10on the pen twice a day

Is that Humulin I or Humulin M3?

One is an intermediate-acting insulin, the other is a pre-mixed / bimodal insulin. Have you been on insulin for a while? Some teams tend to start people on fairly conservative doses - which may explain why your BGs are running a little on the high side.

It might be easier for you to move to a more fully flexible basal:bolus system (with separate long-acting and meal-time insulins that you can adjust and tailor to suit your days). Many of our T3cs are on that system

Yes it's Humulin m3. Well the nurse rings me every 2 weeks at present and as of yesterday I'm on 16 instead of 10.
