So I used my Dads monitor as been symptomatic and had a level on waking of 26 then just over 30 after eating. Spoken to GP and they said to call first thing tomorrow. I am hoping it’s just a glitch with the monitor because although I am going to the loo a lot and I’m a lot more tired I’m not desperately unwell.

So as a newbie what should I expect? I have other health issues and really hope to not add diabetes in the mix :( I guess it’s a wait and see what happens.

Hi @Bumble121 and welcome to the forum - those numbers are high and it is right that you are seeing a GP a.s.a.p. - they should do a blood test to check your HbA1c (results back in a couple of days) to check your average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months - that will determine the next course of action - try not to worry too much (I know that's easy to say) because whatever the result, treatments now are excellent - wishing you all the very best - let us know how you get on - fire away if you have any more questions, we're all here to help and support each other :care:

Thank you. I think I have put a lot of the symptoms down (to the assumption I was in perimenopause). I was genuinely surprised at how high it was. I guess it could be a glitch and be ok Thank you for the response. Hopefully the blood test won’t take long to reassure me 🙂

I would take a urine sample with you, arrive early and ask reception for a pot. The GP will want to dip your urine for glucose and ketones.

Just to reinforce @mashedupmatt . You need to see your GP or your surgeries specialist diabetes nurse asap. They will probably do some finger pricks and organise some more blood tests. When they are back, and the turnaround is usually very quick, then you will know where you stand. Let us know how things go and we will do our best to help you work your way through what is found.

Thank you. They have a new strange system where they won’t give a pot without the doctor’s permission. My daughter recently had a uti and had to wait for the doctor to approve the pot then test then have the appointment. Strange long way to do it. I’m unsure if people were stealing pots I can do it while at the appointment if I need too assume it doesn’t need to be a first morning one?

Just go able to pee if needed then, the GP will most likely send you out to do one if that’s the system. With a bg that high I’ll be amazed if they don’t want to dip the urine there and then not send it off

I need to go pretty much every half an hour to the hour (other than at night which is a couple of times) so no problem with that . Thank you 🙂

That is one of the classic symptoms of high blood glucose as well as thirst, tiredness, fussy vision.

Sorry to hear that you may have diabetes to add to the mix of other conditions you live with. Were the strips for your Dad’s monitor in-date? What type of diabetes does he have?

Hope you are able to be seen swiftly, and get some clarification on your situation.

Keep us posted.

The only thing I would add to the above would be that if you suddenly begin to feel unwell - nausea, sickness, tummy pains etc., then go to A&E.

Hopefully that's not where you are headed but if you do get those symptoms, don't ignore them.

Initially no they weren’t but he gave me some more. They were still the same readings and I did it before and after food. On waking my reading was 25.6 this morning so still high. Have urgent bloods this morning so GP is being great. She is aware of the biologics I am on (they can do funny things to you). So we shall see what happens. As I said to the GP when you always feel unwell it’s a difficult one to notice new things.

Hi and welcome from me too.

I've just quickly read up on Biologics and they can trigger immune response, so I am wondering if they may have triggered Type 1 diabetes. Your sudden high HbA1c makes it important to consider Type 1 and if your HbA1c comes back high as I expect it will with those finger prick readings you might want to mention it to the GP or nurse because otherwise they will likely just assume Type 2, which can mean you are left trying to manage with diet and oral meds when you most likely need insulin.
Is your Dad Type 1?

Pharmacies have them

They didn’t want to do a urine test (I asked on the phone before I arrived at the appointment)

That's odd to me...my doctor always does a dip test before sending to the lab. Maybe because I have a kidney that plays up now and then, but I thought all diabetes tests included a urine sample.
