Swimming

For the last four weeks I have been swimming the first thing in the morning.

Usually, I make sure my levels are about 11, and always find after five or 10 minutes swimming they will shoot up to 14 or 15.

Early in the week, my levels were on 8 and I still got in the water, but was getting out every five minutes to check as I felt a bit uncomfortable being in there that low. But I found my levels were dropping this time, once they got to about 5.5 I got out and got the jelly babies out.

My questions are, what is the safe range that you would go swimming on?

And any ideas why this time round my level is dropped even though I done everything exactly the same?

I usually try to be around 9 to go swimming @Jimmy2202 I then get out at intervals to test, depending on how active I am. Was your second swim also in the morning? I find the time of day can affect things. When I used to go swimming in the evening, for example, I cut my meal bolus and also ate a sweet chocolate bar before getting in the pool. It took a few goes to get things right.

yes I only go swimming 6.30am for half hour then jacuzzi for 10 mins before work - it was just strange every time the swim shoots my levels up yet the time I get in the water lower than usual it dropped.

I go gym for cardio and weights in the evening and just about getting used to how that affects my levels. Getting there I think.

Diabetes does seem to delight n the throwing of curveballs, changing the rules, and moving the goalposts, eh? o_O 🙄

I go swimming at any bg but I eat a banana before setting off to the pool, so that it’s hitting my bg most whilst I swim 30-60 minutes later. Diluted pure orange juice in a water bottle by the pool I found more practical for top ups during swimming if starting on a lower end of normal bg than getting out for jelly babies. I’d get out if I felt low though.

Realised I didn’t clarify - I don’t take any insulin for the banana

Alcohol the previous evening or running low over the previous night can significantly reduce hepatic glucose production in the morning (e.g. dawn effect/foot on the floor), I expect a similar thing happens in response to morning exercise induced stress hormones.
