Hi everyone

Got my type 2 diagnosis on the 18th October, hba1c of 98, after being very thirsty and peeing a lot.
Started on gliclazide twice a day and metformin which has increased weekly.
I completely changed how I eat and started exercising more and now my blood test on the at home thing varies between 4 and 7 and Iv lost 4kg. First few weeks when I dropped below 5 I felt terrible but now feel completely fine sitting around 4.5.
GP is lowering my dose of gliclazide and putting me eventually on mounjaro.
Many other people on mounjaro and how is it affecting you?
Still struggling at times mentally with the diagnosis but reading about it helps.
Thanks everyone

Well done on your improvement @JCD, you're obviously working hard to get that hba1c down and improve your fitness. I can't comment on mounjaro since I'm on plain old metformin, but I'm sure there will be others along soon who have experience of it.
Keep up the great work!

Hi @JCD and welcome to the forum - The mental aspect of a diabetes diagnosis is quite often overlooked - 4.5 to 5.0 is brilliant and well done for losing 4kg - sounds like you are definitely on the right track - well done - and you can read plenty about things on here - you are definitely in the right place - feel free to ask any questions you have, however trivial they may seem - there are plenty of caring people on here who genuinely want to help by sharing their own experiences - good luck!

Hi @JCD and welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry you've had to join us but do know there's a lot of support and great advice in here <3 Please don't feel like you have to 'always get it right' - a lot of it is going through ups and downs, both in numbers and mentally. So please come along and share your success with us (I can tell you're determined and we always look for updates from our newbies), however on an 'off day' - feel free to rant, as we take those too 😉 Questions, observations or the oddest discoveries - everything's welcomed!

Thanks everyone, getting stuck into reading all the useful information here. It’s a steep learning curve.

Hi @JCD welcome to the forum, firstly may I join others in saying well done on that initial reduction in your BS & weight loss :star:
that initially feeling a bit crappy with what your body thinks at first is a low levels

I’ve been on Mounjaro for nearly 5 months, and for me it’s been really good, there’s certainly a few of us on here regularly that are on MJ
currently I’m not loosing weight, but I need to speak to my GP about increasing my weekly dose (which really should’ve happened a few months ago (but for other reasons we delayed the increase in dosage)
I’m also on Insulin (I’m a previously long time poorly controlled T2 Diabetic)

after 30 years I’m still struggling with some of the stress being Diabetic brings (ontop of the usual stress and anxiety of modern life) but for me this forum kind of keeps me level headed I’m sure

we’re all different and we all react differently to the meds that can help us, good luck on your journey
By the way @JCD do you have much weight to loose ?

Hello @JCD and welcome to the forum.
I do wonder if you will need medication long term as your blood glucose levels have lowered so much.
I started with HbA1c of 91 8 years ago and abandoned medication very quickly as it made me so ill. I have relied on eating a low carb diet for control and have been in remission for some years now.
Trying to lower my HbA1c from the very top end of normal I tried the slimming shakes and fasting/low calorie scheme which has helped quite a few people, but it did not work for me, and my HbA1c went up to 48 after 2 months of that. I wonder if it was actually detrimental for me to fast until late afternoon and to be drinking milk and having carbs in the shake powder.
My usual regime has fresh veges, salad and fruit, and frozen veges and berries, and I eat at around 12 hour intervals. To lower my blood glucose down to under 8mmol/l at the 2 hour mark after meals I have stuck to under 40 gm of carbs a day, but I was left with a flagged high glucose level not acted on for 10 years before diagnosis so that can't have done me much good.
I used a glucose testing meter at first and it was very useful indicating which foods/meals elevated my blood glucose levels.

I started at around 130kg, I’m 6’3 but very broad build. Currently down to 126kg and ideally want to get to around 110kg then see from there.

Everything so far has been through my GP, waiting on an app with a nutritionist because at times I do go low, went to 3.6 earlier and am currently struggling to get above 5 at times.

Did you have any side effects on mounjaro?

Seems like a great place here, definitely helps with the steep learning curve

My GP discussed the shakes thing with me but not sure it was appropriate right now but they are going to review it with me again.

Understanding food is what I’m mostly struggling with. I don’t eat vegetables, never have and don’t enjoy them. Iv changed to whole grains and plenty of fruit and chicken and fish. Iv been eating loads of pineapple, grapes, oranges and apples, brown pasta and brown rice but don’t seem to be getting any major spikes.

At the minute I feel I need to do a lot more reading about food

Hi @JCD and welcome to the forum, do spend some time reading stuff in the learning zone as this will help answer some of your questions and give you a good insight into diabetes.

Do ask as many questions as you wish as there are some very knowledgeable people here, who I'm sure will be able to help

Alan 😉

Some of those fruits may not be doing you any favours, pineapple and grapes are very high carb fruits, berries are the lowest with apples, oranges, kiwi, melon being somewhere in the middle.
Brown pasta and rice are high carb so you need to be careful of your portion size.
Can you incorporate vegetables into other dishes like chilli, curries, bolognaise or home made soups or have them raw rather than cooked.

Welcome and Well done with weight loss and reducing blood glucose levels @JCD

Wow - all those high carb foods must be being dealt with by the medication as most type 2's would struggle with the starch and sugars in those foods.
The shakes regime doesn't seem to work for some. I am still trying to work out why it didn't work for me.
