A few nice sunny days and my thoughts have turned to those enjojable Summery days (possibly because I am hoping for a few daytrips to the beach soon too!)

When I was diagnosed, a DSN told me that as an occasional treat ice cream on a Summer’s day was likely to be fairly BG friendly. I don’t remember any technical explanations about fat content, warmer weather/insulin sensitivity, or likelihood of increased activity offsetting the carbs while walking along the prom, but it has been my experience over the years that an ice cream on a day out can often be enjoyed without too much need for mental juggling, and any insulin dosing.

Do other people find the same? Does it work the same for T2s?

Like most things, it depends.....

On our walks around the village we have called in the local shop for a Costa takeaway for Mrs B and an ice cream for me. Not much of a selection so usually finished up with a Galaxy, about as far away from real ice cream that you can get. No problem, a quick check on getting home showed me still well within limits. Last week we went for a ride to walk on Pilling sands and called in at a well respected local real "ice cream" maker for a small tub each. Got home and checked and found a spike. Not massive, but a bigger rise than I would expect from a normal meal.

So for me it depends. Might even argue that junk ice cream is better than the real stuff!

Hot weather and exercise always = a low so yes an ice cream would basically ward off a hypo.
If I sat at home an enjoyed an ice cream then I would have to bolus for it

I find ice-cream a very forgiving snack. Hardly need any insulin and don't get a big rise in bs. This is great as I love ice-cream.

The proper Cornish stuff seems to be best for me, better than those low cal ones like Halo.

Ice cream, ice cream .... ahhh, ice cream.
The one thing I can’t resist, but guaranteed to give me a spike. We’ve a local restaurant that has home made ice cream on their menu - three flavours. Absolutely irresistible!
Notwithstanding the weather here in NI ice cream is extremely popular and there are ice cream parlours everywhere. Some have especially nice soft serve.
I know to walk it off!

With you on that one Madeline Its in abundance here and a parlour selling Italian ice cream,
so many flavours to choose from.

I'm not a massive fan of ice cream, but if you were to tempt me to give me some Ben and Jerrys.
I always bolus for Ice cream.

The only ice cream I can have without it causing a massive spike is Ben & Jerry’s Moophoria - that said I’ve not tried the Halo ones but the B&J tastes like real ice cream.

I might try the Moophoria one then, if only they made a friendly Chunky Monkey.

It’s really not bad at all. Just never buy it when it’s full price!

I’m pretty much ok with ice cream. I can take it or leave it and I don’t have it a lot...theatre interval obviously, day out if it’s nice ice cream and good flavour options maybe, but I’m just as happy not to. We usually have some mini Magnums in the freezer for those moments when you just fancy something, 15g each I think and these cause me no problems at all...good chocolate to ice cream ratio on a mini too🙂

I have debated whether or not to post the following picture. So few opportunities to show it.

Look away now if you are easily offended!

Toronto last summer visiting my son. Day one my daughter and I walked 40 mins in 29c, high humidity, slightly jet lagged to a disappointing artisan market, managed to follow super over of the cricket World Cup, stressful but ultimately exciting. On 40 min walk back we needed to celebrate and cool down, so joined the queue for this Japanese ice cream shop...we weren’t sure wether to eat them or plant our faces in them...they were certainly big enough. Charcoal cone. I had absolutely no idea what this monster counted for and frankly at that moment I didn’t care. I estimated 40 and an hour later bg was 10 I think...I was pretty happy with that, another hour and back to normal.

on the subject of icecream ,i have one everyday. macdonalds,i just cant help it. i love ice lollies but certain whipped ice creams like choc or strawberry i could eat n eat.the seaside ones.some icecreams are too much for me i can take a mouthfull and theyre too rich n have actually made me ill.the really creamy ones.im not keen on those mega expensive ones either.but the love of icecream is my fate.

French ice cream with real whatever in it - if it's a parlour so they serve in dishes with a spoon to eat (and a wafer like a wedge out of a circle) a scoop of cafe, one of pale green pistache and another of pale pink fraise. Otherwise, a spoonful of Carte d'Or vanilla suits me fine as does a scoop of proper Vainille in France - the black bits are tiny bits of ground up vanilla seeds. Delish. You can keep yer artificially flavoured muck.

Those look AMAZING!!!! Can your recall what flavours they were?

I used to live about two seconds walk from a gelateria which made incredible gelato. Really inventive flavour combinations and only ever in very limited quantities. I was their first ever customer and would pop in for a chat from time to time and they’d let me walk their dog and sometimes babysit the bambino. When they started to do take out in insulated polystyrene boxes I would come home and find a box of experimental flavours on my doorstep quite frequently.

And I wonder how I piled on the pounds!!

Who doesn’t love a Mr Whippy from time to time!

Those tiny bits are probably just vanilla seeds. They’re really tiny and I’ve never known a recipe call for grinding them down.
If you scrape the seeds out of vanilla pod just remember that the pod itself still has the power to flavour things so shove it in a jar of sugar or whichever low carb sugar replacement you’re using and let the flavour develop. It adds another layer of flavour when baking.

Joe’s ice-cream parlour, Mumbles, Swansea - Homer Simpson drooling emoji! 😛
