Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, everyone. I have an Uncle living in Zimbabwe who has Type 2 diabetes and is on Metaforman and needs to test approx every 2 days dependant on what he has eaten. His Accu Check machine is broken and he needs a new machine so my question is can you advice me of a good machine and one that can use universal strips please - thank you

There is no such thing as a blood glucose machine that uses universal test strips. Some machines are not available in al, countries and not all countries use the same units of measurements.

Thank you - it seems to be a bit of an uphill struggle to send him the right thing!

I doubt you'd be able to get a UK supplier to send anything to Zimbabwe - where did he get his current machine from and where is he getting the test strips from? There are only 50 in a tub, so that's been and will be an ongoing need.

Hi, thanks for responding. I appreciate that local suppliers will not send anything to Zimbabwe hence I’m trying to get it sorted to go back with someone I know who is travelling there in a couple of weeks time. My relatives have family in New Zealand too so we’re all trying to pull together to ensure he has the right thing so we can maintain it for him. What would you suggest as a good basic machine - he not on insulin and is not taking any meds that would cause his sugar to surge?

If he is self funding, the two meters we recommend as they work out the cheapest are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Healthcare Tee2. These meters cost about £15 to purchase but the main reason for recommending is that the test strips for them are the cheapest on the market @£8 for a pot of 50 whereas many other test strips are double or even triple that.
Obviously he will need plenty of pots of test strips to keep him supplied for a long period and bear un mind that they do have an expiry date but it is usually a year or more. They are available to buy online and there will be a check box to tick to confirm that they are for someone with diabetes so that they should be VAT exempt and it is deducted from the price if you tick the box. I believe it applies to people buying for a third party as well as individuals buying for themselves.

Hope that helps you get something sorted for him.
