Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I am new to forums, I have T1D since 2017 and am now currently in university (actually in summer break). Things have been a bit hard as I live with roommates and all this covid situation is causing me a lot of anxiety and I am feeling quite lonely with social distancing and not really feeling supported... I also don't have any friends around my age with t1d, which I guess doesn't help. Hope everyone's doing okay 🙂

Hi @art04 and welcome to the forum.
Lockdown seems to have had a big impact on mental health even if its loneliness. Sorry you dont have much of a support network but you've come to the right place. The people here are so friendly and supportive with any questions or even a chat when you need someone to talk too.

Hi art04. Type 1 can be very isolating, especially if you don't know anyone else with it. I love art too - I work in an art gallery and went to art college. What sort of art do you like? I find making stuff and drawing to be very therapeutic. There are loads of friendly people on here, although not necessarily your age group!
It is good to have people who 'get it' and have your back, which you will definitely find here

Hi @brisr949 thank you!
Yes it most definitely has. I'm glad I'm here now! Thank you for the very friendly words, it's nice to know that. 🙂 🙂

Hi and welcome from me too.

Have you done any courses like DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) as they are great opportunities to meet other Type 1s in person as well as learn a huge amount about Type 1 diabetes management, though unfortunately at the moment all face to face courses are on hold but worth getting your name down for when they are back up and running, so speak to your nurse if you haven't been offered one yet.

What management system are you using? MDI or a pump? Do you have Freestyle Libre?

What type of art do you do?
I was just watching a program on TV this afternoon about 3 artists who compete for a commission. They get to snoop around the customer's home to see their tastes and then pitch their ideas. Today it was a lady who made wire animal sculptures, a guy who sculpted in stone and another lady who painted with acrylics. The customers... a couple today... eliminate one of the 3 after the ideas are pitched and then the remaining two complete their commission piece and the customer decides which of the 2 they prefer. The one that won today was a highland cow made of wire with butterflies on it. It was amazing and the program encourages viewers to scout for local artists and commission them to do pieces.... it is really enjoyable program as the customers get quite emotional at the big reveal and the artwork is fabulous!

Hi @art04
Welcome to the forum 🙂
You’ll find plenty of friendly people here, although there are not many who are your age now, they’ve all been there and plenty with diabetes at the time so will understand how you feel.
Are you studying something arty at uni? My daughter has just finished her second year in comics.

Hello @rebrascora , oh no I haven't! I'll keep it in mind to ask as that would be nice. Thank you!

MDI and I use Freestyle Libre! I like doing all sorts of art, painting with oil paint, drawing, photography, music, video making etc. I really like to explore all the different techniques there are and keep learning.

Oh wow I loved to read that! Do you know the name of the program? It is great that they are encouraging local artists and giving them the opportunity to get more known for their work on TV. Sound like a fun program to watch! I would love to watch that! Please let me know if you know the name, thank you for sharing that with me 🙂🙂

Hi @LucyDUK

Oh yes, makes sense 🙂 Thanks! I am about to start studying Art Direction, which I am very excited for! Oh comics must be very exciting! I also like drawing and story-telling which is a lot what art is about. That's very nice, thank you 🙂🙂

Hi again

It is called "Home is where the Art is!" presented by Nick Knowles and it is on BBC. If you do a google search you will find it. The different mediums people use to create art are really fascinating. I have only seen two episodes so far and the previous one, the couples were so taken with both of the commission pieces one in metal and the other in glass that they couldn't choose one over the other and decided to buy them both.

Hello and welcome 🙂
There are quite a few members into arts and crafts here. Also check out ArTiDiabetes on face book.

I enjoy working in an art gallery - I am the learning officer,so all about encouraging others to get creative and access our collections etc. Furloughed at the minute though. We have a summer internship programme if ever you are interested - but we are on the middle of nowhere in Suffolk!

Hello,

Thank you very much! I will definitely watch it! Found the season two on bbc iPlayer! And wow that must have been very exciting for both of the artists.

Oh that's amazing, loved that you encourage people, that's beautiful! Yes I absolutely get it that right now it's not really happening, but it seems very nice. I've never been to Suffolk but that would be a very nice experience. Maybe next summer!

Welcome to the forum @art04

I’m another arty type. I was diagnosed in the final year of my graphic design degree and have been a practicing graphic/web designer for 30 years, more recently moving into picking up my late wife’s linocut printmaking business.

Creating things is very good for the mind, heart and soul I think.

Hope your studies go well, and you find a fulfulling and satisfying role after graduation.

JDRF have a ‘university toolkit’ which you might find helpful

And Diabetes UK used to publish a ‘housemate checklist’ which was a great icebreaker for those in your house who know nothing about T1D.

Glad you have found the forum! Keep in contact, and keep asking questions 🙂

Ooh, would love to see some of the linocuts. We have a printmaking studio at work. I mainly do drypoints.
