Hi @Bamjjm it sounds like you’ve had quite a dramatic diagnosis. It can be a shock at the best of times without the added stress of an emergency situation. Are you home now? Hopefully now you have a diagnosis you’ll begin to feel relieved of the symptoms you were experiencing prior to going to hospital. How are you feeling now?

Yes home now, and feeling better , so much to learn at the moment. I have times when I feel good, but I can change and feeling upset, tearful. So angry with myself for getting this way

Welcome to the forum. It’s a positive step you’ve taken by joining us crazy folks and introducing yourself.
You’ve just been diagnosed which is of course a shock but you’re amongst friends here and nobody will judge or preach or laugh at so called silly questions, so pull up a chair and ask anything that comes into mind and someone will be able to point you in the right direction I’m sure.

So how did you end up at A&E and are you happy to share details of what the doctors said?

Had a blood test the week before as feeling unwell, drinking gallons day and night , losing weight. Rang up for the results doctor rang me back and told me to go to A&E now!! That was that!! No clue what was wrong before I went.

Its understandable to be a bit up and down emotionally after such an experience and the diagnosis itself. I’m glad you are at least feeling physically better, but try not to be too hard on yourself (easier to say I know). There is a lot to learn but you don’t need to know it all in a day, try and focus on what’s most important now and learn the rest when you feel ready. The learning zone at the top of the page might be helpful when you do want to start learning a bit more, but you’ll also hear plenty of personal experience and knowledge that from other members here too who’ll be happy answer any questions you have too.

Welcome to the forum Bamjjm from a fellow T2.
Were your trying to loose weight?

Welcome to the forum @Bamjjm .
Why on earth would your dr frighten the life out of you by saying that, i can't work out why they didn't just call you in and tell you what's what.
Or was there something else that needed hospital treatment?

My blood sugars were 35 and Ketones 2.2

Hi and welcome from me too.

Your sudden onset symptoms sound very similar to mine except that my GP practice treated me with oral meds for Type 2 for 6 weeks before starting me on insulin and during that time I learned to eat very low carb and avoided hospital. I was eventually referred to the diabetes clinic where the consultant authorised GAD antibody and C-peptide tests which showed that I was Type 1 and not Type 2, which is why I didn't respond to oral meds. Having that correct diagnosis can make a considerable difference, so I would suggest that you ask about having those tests done. The sudden weight loss is the big difference between Type 1 and Type 2, where many people need to lose weight and have to put effort into it. Mine just dropped off at a rate of 4lbs a week and I can still remember looking down at my arms and legs and not recognising them as mine because I lost so much flesh.

Hi @Bamjjm, don't be too hard on yourself, I was diagnosed purely by chance, I had been getting treatment for years for depression and anxiety and in passing mentioned a thirst to my doctor at a review. I had always been a active person. So be kind to yourself and look after your self.
kind regards

Sorry you had such a stressful diagnosis @Bamjjm I hope you’re feeling better physically now.

I’m another one suggesting this sounds like it could be a Type 1 rather than Type 2. Do push for blood tests to check your type. The positive thing is that at least you’re on insulin now. That might not sound positive to you at the moment but it should make you feel a lot better.

Welcome to the forum @Bamjjm. Glad you have found us.
As others have said, the sudden onset of your symptoms could well indicate T1 rather than T2.
It is not uncommon for people to be misdiagnosed, so would be worth following up.

Let us know how you get on.

Why do you think it's type 1 ?

People with T2 don’t tend to lose weight at diagnosis. They may well as a result of their diagnosis through changing their diet and increasing their levels of exercise.

With T1 not only do you experience thirst, tiredness and frequent toilet visits, but you tend to lose weight as well. I lost 1 1/2 stone in one week just before diagnosis. This is because with T1, the beta cells that make insulin are destroyed by antibodies that are triggered for some reason. Once you have so few left your body cannot process glucose, the only source of energy is then your fat stores (hence the weight loss). In processing the body fat ketones are produced (another difference from T2).

I hope that this makes sense.

Why do you think it's type 1 ?

For the same reasons as previous posters - the weight loss and the ketones mainly. It might indeed be Type 2 but I’d personally want Type 1 ruled out due to your symptoms and the way it presented.
