My mental health, OCD and anxiety are taking a real bashing at the moment with everything going on, I haven't been out the house in 12 weeks, I'm losing skin off my hands, I'm crying all the time and things got worse last night when the washing machine gave in, washing had to be done in the bath and hung out today, I've ordered a new washing machine from Curry's (although didn't really have the money spare to do so but hey ho) and will be delivered next Wednesday, Bruce will be taking our stuff and washing it for us and bringing us it wet so we can dry ourselves on the airer, then to top all this c**p off the power went out at 7:15 this morning, so here's where I need a bit of advice, it was off for just over 4 hours and the fridge opened a maximum of 3 times while the power was out, will the insulin I have in there still be good to use? Or should I order fresh? Any help would be greatly appreciated at this desperate for me time if you could be so kind, thank you!
xx

Hi Kaylz
So sorry that you are really struggling at the moment. Things are just not going your way.

Since the weather has turned cooler and presumably your heating was also off due to the power cut (I know what your Mam is like for heat) and the fridge was kept shut for the majority of that time, I think it is extremely unlikely that your insulin has been compromised in any way as a result of that. It copes OK with the journey home from the pharmacy and I usually walk it so mine is half an hour out of the fridge then and I don't think twice about that, even on a warm day.
That would be my logic anyway.

Hope you start to get better luck soon.

*{hugs}*
I don't specifically about the insulin. Most everything else most likely ok.

I think your insulin probably stayed cold enough, it takes ages for a new cartridge to warm up enough to use when I start a new one. I also take spare cartridges on holiday with me, so they’re out of the fridge for 3 hours or more in the car, then into the fridge at whatever cottage we’ve gone to, then back three hours in the car and into our own fridge again. I’ve never noticed a problem with them.
I'm sorry you're having such a tough time at the moment, (((hugs)))

I know it’s not easy fir you, sometimes it just seems to be one thing after another isn’t it.

I’ve found insulin to be remarkably resilient, I’ve accidentally used insulin a couple of months out of date and a cartridge that I hadn’t realised was being cooked, because the handbag my pen was in was hanging on the back of a chair in full sun for around a week , it was a hot summer too ( it was cool when I needed to use it so I hadn’t realised) both times the only thing that happened was , I needed more units than usual. so your insulin should be absolutely fine.

Your in use insulin is fine out of the fridge for a month, so a few hours with no power will make no difference at all to the ones in the fridge. And like @Ljc says, I suspect it's a lot more resilient than that, the one month thing is just a guideline beyond which the manufacturers cannot guarantee that it will stay fresh, but it won’t suddenly go off overnight if you go past that!

(((hugs)))

There's light at the end of the tunnel, just hang on in there. The library is opening soon, I'm very happy. I can get large prints again for Mum. You'll be back to normal asap with any luck. Wear gloves at night after slathering vaseline all over your hands, works for me.

Hey, your insulin in the fridge should be fine. When we had a power cut, our electric company told us fridges stay at fridge temp for about 8 hours.

Hi Kaylz, as said above yes to the insulin being alright in the fridge with the power off for a few hours. The rest of it, do the do-ables and look after yourself as best you can. It does seem to follow sometimes that things just keep on piling in one after the next all compounding each other. Tick off the things that are getting sorted and put them to one side so that you free up some headspace . I'm sorry you're having a tough time at present x

No advice on the insulin but wanted to say sorry your having a rubbish time at the moment

Insulin will be fine, so that's one less stress factor for you. At one stage when I didn't have a fridge I kept my supply for months without any issues.

Sorry Kaylz, haven’t got a dicky on the insulin but sad to hear things are getting on top of you. Being indoors for that length of time is enough to drive anybody round the bend. Seeing as you have anxiety and OCD as well personally I think you’ve coped extremely well and should actually give yourself a pat on the back. As rules start to slacken I hope you feel able to take some short walks out in the fresh air, you can keep well away from people, and it should help you feel more human again. Take good care and big hugs to you xxx

Thanks guys for the info regarding the insulin, I need to change my Novorapid later in prep for tomorrow anyway and think Tresiba will need changed tomorrow before I take it, thanks for all the hugs and caring thoughts, it really means a lot and I'll admit I've had a few crying meltdowns since things started going wrong last night
xx

Kaylz - FWIW I assure you, you have reacted exactly like a normal ordinary human being - NOT 'like a quivering wreck'! Just flippin sheer frustration. {{{Hugs}}}

Keep your chin up Kaylz. Its a horrible time atm without other things to worry about. Our power went off a few weeks ago and the insulin was fine. Try and deal with the things you can alter and let the other things go for now. Easier said than done i know but if it helps, theres nothing wrong with a good cry. Big hugs to you.

As others have said @Kaylz, the insulin from the fridge should be fine. It does indeed take quite a while to warmup enough to use when I have forgotten to take it out in good time for a change over.
If you are worried after your next switch just keep any eye on levels.

‘Life’s a bitch, and then she has pups’. Sorry you have had so many different things to deal with. A meltdown is understandable. ((((Hugs))))) from me.

Just {{{HUGS}}} Kaylz.

Thanks so much guys I really do appreciate your support not only just through this tough time but all the time! I was worried enough last week when the wee fridge my insulin was in gave up and had to switch it to the fridge/freezer but seems to be ok on the middle shelf just now, guess everything is just piling up in one go, cant wait till the washing machine comes as it's ashame on poor Bruce having to cart washing up and down the road but he was kind enough to offer and the way I am I need my washing done lol, had a nice extra long extra hot shower (sensor change tomorrow so a nice treat) and feel a little better for the time being
xxxx

Ah @Kaylz! Sorry to hear what a rotten time you’ve been having. Never rains but it pours eh?

Sounds like you coped admirably with a whole heap of stress, and have been working through it and sorting it all out bit by bit.

Hope your anxiety and stress levels can begin to subside, and that the washing machine delivery goes smoothly.
