Hi I’m Leah my son is 5 years old and was newly diagnosed 2 weeks ago . Thought I’d say hi as trying to get used to all this and so is he .

Hi. And welcome. 🙂

This place is full of great advice and reassurance so feel free to share any concerns at any time and you’ll get someone with much more knowledge and experience than me responding 🙂

Hi @Lepow82 🙂 Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis. It is a lot to get used to for anyone, particularly a child. It does get easier though.

There are other parents of Type 1 children here who’re very helpful and supportive, and plenty of people who can give advice.

What insulins is your son taking? How are his blood sugars?

Hello @Lepow82 and welcome to the forum.
It is a difficult time for you and your son, and I hope that the forum will give you some help and support.
I will tag @LucyDUK and @Thebearcametoo who are both parents of diabetic children to ensure that they see your message.

Hi and welcome. I’m so sorry for your son’s diagnosis. How are you finding it?
The first few weeks are a lot of information and it feels overwhelmingly. You will soon get the hang of carb counting and all of that. Don’t feel like you have to change his diet. My daughter eats the same things she did before we just give her things like sweets with meals and keep the portions small.
We’re here to support you and to answer questions but lean on your diabetes team too. It’s ok to call them on the out of hours numbers with anything you’re unsure of.

Sorry still getting used to this posting ....my little one is on novo rapid and tresiba his blood sugars are doing ok ish we were spiking at breakfast and in the night ... now we’re just at night and hypo after breakfast it differs ... he’s coping ok at the min sometimes cross and frustrated but he’s been so good ... I work in a hospital so am used to the blood sugars but the rest is all brand new so it’s been difficult ...the hospital have been amazing and his diabetic nurses are wonderful... it’s nice to meet everyone and thank you xxx

Welcome to the forum. It is certainly a tricky time for a new diagnosis without the face to face contact you might normally get. Glad your team have been wonderful. My daughter is on the same insulins and was diagnosed on 1st May, but is 16 so very much able to understand what is going on. I hope your 5yr old isn't struggling too much. Let us know if there is anything we can help with.

Awww hope she’s ok at 16 it’s a tricky time too ! The hospital gave him a diabetic teddy called rufus and a story book he comes with which helped massively !! He just struggles with the change a bit but to be expected ... and deff a tricky time but thanks for being so supportive everyone xx

Alice got a Rufus bear too, despite being 16. She's grown quite attached to him

As I was diagnosed at 4 1/2 do you think I can have a bear as well even though it's 55 years later ? :D 😎

@Lepow82 your little lad will adapt very well and you will be surprised how well he does do. Even after all this time I can still remember my diagnoses and can not remember life before diabetes.
Take one day at a time and ask all the questions you need to ask. As a youngster I was told my insulin was magic medicine to keep me well.

We can ask lol my little man says it’s his flash pen which makes him a superhero

Welcome to the forum @Lepow82

Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis. It sounds like you are both doing brilliantly!

He is absolutely right! All youngsters with T1 are complete superheroes (as are those who look after them). I have the comic book to prove it - perhaps one for later years?

Ah sorry to hear this @Lepow82 - hope things settle overnight and you have a better day tomorrow.

Hope your night wasn't too bad. We have done quite a bit of adjusting as honeymoon period kicks in. Started at 12 units of tresiba - currently on 8 with 1 to 12 ratio for novorapid. Hope you have a better day tomorrow
