Hi @Peatie58 and welcome to the forum 🙂

I'm 3 years and almost 3 months into my "sentence" now lol

It is a lot to take in and process but you'll be dishing out advice to newbies in no time, in the meantime if there are any specific questions you want to ask then do feel free, we're mostly a friendly bunch here with tonnes of knowledge between us 🙂

What insulins have you been put on to?
xx

Welcome to the forum Peatie.

Welcome to the forum @Peatie58

Ask away with any questions you may have.

How have you found it so far? Have you been introduced to the concept of carb counting yet? And what insulins have you been started on?

Hi and welcome to the forum @Peatie58

It is a shock at the start and there is indeed a lot to learn very quickly.
I liken it to learning to drive. It seems very complicated at the start but then you hardly
notice you are doing so much of it automatically.

Ask whatever questions you have, and know that nothing is considered silly on here.

I’m on glargine / nova rapid 11 /6 ,, not long out of hospital just starting to feel better ,such as lot has changed eyes (just got new glasses) not been able to walk to far. Q , how do you walk exercise and not have hypos, thank you all looking forward to reading and learning more .

if your on set units of insulin then it makes exercising without a hypo more difficult, it also depends on the type of exercise, us carb counters if going for a long walk etc may count our carbs, work out what we'd need for what we were having and then reduce it by some, some may just take on extra carbs without injecting for them if they know they are likely to drop xx

Whenever possible, plan ahead a bit. So if you intend to walk after lunch, inject less NovoRapid for lunch. And/or eat more.

How much should you eat, and how much less insulin should you use? It depends, and to be honest there's some amount of just doing the best you can and trying to fix it up as necessary. With any luck your diabetes team can give you some help, too. If you feel yourself going a bit low then slow down and eat something. (All this is easier if you've got something like Libre (and if it works well for you) since you can usually get some advance warning and eat (or maybe speed up your walking a little).)

The timing of nova rapid is important if you are exercising . I always wait at least half an hour but that’s me ... you’ll find out what suits you by trial and error . Always be prepared for hypos , my walking jacket has orange juice and melba toasts in it . I’m relatively new to all this as well , it is all trial and error and having a back up plan. Good luck

As your BG return to normal you may find your eyes adjust, so keep an eye(!) on whether things are staying in focus with your new glasses.
