Hi all, I want to obtain a 7.5 tonne licence to drive for work, am type 2 on 2000mg Metformin daily. Doctor has said I’m fit to drive, but am concerned that medical for heavy goods vehicles are more strict, with regards to diabetes

Well an HGV one is - but you only want an LGV which I had grandmother rights to despite the insulin, until a few years ago. Did you pass your 'car' test too late to have 'C1' automatically included?

Yes don’t want to give my age away lol see what doctor says, he said I should be off all diabetic medication pretty soon

Well if mean have grandfather rights despite having no grandkids, a lady must have grandmother rights whether she happens to be one or not! Not having had any children, I could never be a grandmother, could I?

The main concern with diabetics is over risk of having a hypo while driving. So, while the medical requirements are more stringent and more thoroughly assessed, as long as you're not taking insulin or any other medication that increases risk of hypos, I don't think diabetes should stop you getting your c1 license.

A GP can’t tell you that you are fit to drive. That’s for the DVLA to decide. Their requirements on visual fields and acuity are set out in the license regulations, as well as medication. Metformin won’t affect a driving licence.
