Hi,
Out of the blue diagnosed with prediabetes and tbh I am so worried. I must lose 50lbs and it seems unachievable. I am seeing the nurse Monday afternoon. I'd like to try the low calories low carb diet that can reverse this condition, has anyone had experience with this? I thought perhaps combining it with TRE would also help so any thoughts or experiences of this would be helpful.

I'm 71 years young and definitely don't feel my age, do pilates 3 times a week and tai chi once, walk my puppy for 45 minutes daily but perhaps I ned to do harder exercise?

I have a sweet tooth, love big dinners, white bread, crisps so I was a diabetic in the making really. All that has to stop and I need to educate myself on what and when to eat.

Any help, advice would be so helpful, look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks,
Sheila x

I suggest that you forget about weightloss and low calorie diets - as a diabetic you cannot cope with carbs - they increase your blood glucose and that does damage - so sort out what you are eating - make crispy cheese things in the oven, swap the potatoes for cauliflower, throw out the breakfast cereals - in six months you could be 50lb lighter, and have put your diabetes into remission, but as a side effect of getting your blood glucose into normal figures.

Thank you, that sounds achievable. I was reading the Fast 800 book by Dr Michael Mosley which is low carb, I think and that seemed to be a possibility. Good luck with the Morris dancing, I have a friend who does that and organises all sorts.

Hi it may seem an impossible task, but I have lost 35 pounds since the first week in May this year by adopting a low carb diet,it sounds like your doing more activity than me so if you keep that up you will lose the weight fine,I'm sure you will be surprised,I,I HAVE have stopped eating bread, baked beans, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereals and now eat chicken, tuna, fish without breadcrumbs or batter,I eat lots of salads, stir fries, vedgetables, for breakfast I avoid oats and wheat and have full fat natural Greek Milbona yogurt from Lidl it comes in a 1kg tub,I have 100-120g of that with berries(I buy frozen then thaw for 10 mins in water in morning)Aldi's 1kg four seasons fruit mix that contains strawberries, raspberies, blackberries, blackcurrants berries are quite low carb,I crush a few walnuts on top.
I haven't got bored of eating healthily, even though my diet isn't very varied it tastes nice and I know it's healthy and that makes me feel good that I'm doing the best for myself, you will do fine, stay positive and be happy🙂
You look young in the photo, that will be the exercise, keep up the walking 45 minutes is excellent

Hi Sheila, it is definitely doable as many of us have done it 🙂 sounds like you have the exercise under control so just need to adapt your diet now 🙄 Going low carb will make a huge difference and you are likely to see a drop in weight as you go. It’s hard at first, working out what foods work best for you, I spent the first couple of weeks convinced I would starve to death 😱 I’m now just over a year in, 4 stone lighter, sleeping better, loving my food, fitter and healthier than I’ve ever been with my bg in normal range for over 6 months :D

Hi Sheila and welcome, the others have said it all, low carb way of life will have that weight coming off, don’t bother counting calories, they are mostly irrelevant. I lost 20lb without trying. I was a bit hungry to be honest to start with as I’m a fussy eater so struggled with my choices but have since learnt that I can have snacks when needed of a few nuts or berries, I have 2 chunks of 85% dark choc a day or a few chunks of cheese. Surprisingly my cholesterol has also come back into normal figures despite increasing my fat intake, it can be very confusing as we have been taught the opposite for so many years. Look forward to hearing how you get on and ask any questions you have at any time x

Hi. New Prediabetic also seeing nurse on Monday. Need to lose about 6 stone and find time to exercise instead of work&sleep. Have found the people on here amazingly supportive and helpful.

It can be done . I’ve lost about six stone in the last 15 months . I walked my dog for an extra 10 minutes and watched everything I ate . I can eat loads , it’s just salad and veg and fruit now rather than carbs . I have lost weight before but always put it back on. It’s not easy but it’s worth it

Hi and welcome @Sheilaslims, it certainly is doable as many here will tell you, I went low carb and like @Freddie1966 i dog walk, I don’t have a dog so borrow my neighbours 🙄 didn’t take long to see those numbers drop along with the lbs, I’m now 4 stone lighter and been in normal range for about 6 months, I have a healthy appetite but find now I can’t eat as much as I used to as I get full quicker than I used to. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. I started on 4 x metformin a day and am now diet controlled only 😉

Hi @CathyB did you have to take the metformin for long,I was diagnosed in the first week of May 2019 I have lost 3 stone eating low carb and have been taking Metformin 1000mg for 2 months,I should be out getting exercise but haven't got the get up and go at the moment,I did at the start my neighbours must have just seen a blurr as I darted past their windows😎

Having my dog has made me exercise. Sometimes he just looks at me as if to say do I really need another walk

Metformin makes some people rather ill, so do watch out if you start to look back and wonder what has happened to your life.

I took it for about a year, bringing it down slowly as my numbers dropped. I struggled with the exercise bit, I borrow a neighbours dog and just walk, it was so hard at first as I also have a dodgy ticker, but now I can walk at a good pace for around 45 to 60 mins. It takes time, be patient with yourself, you have done really well with the weight loss.

That's great your neighbours must love you,I need to get active again,I have been using my push bike and doing a few miles in the week, but I think the brisk walking is of more benefit as I haven't got a saddle to support my weigth,I just don't seem to have the energy after losing a lot of weight on a low carb diet over the last 3 months,I'm seeing the nurse at the end of the month and will see what she say,I have no idea if Metformin and no exercise will do much good for me,I don't want to look back and have missed this opportunity to try and prevent any problems and stay healthy

The diet change is the most important, the exercise helps of course, both in bringing the numbers down and with the weight loss but don’t stress it, you have lost a lot already so stay on track and be kind to yourself :D

The nurses all say loose weight and exercise like it is the easiest thing in the world to loose weight. It’s very hard but I’m glad I’ve done it as it has put me in a better place to deal with my type 1 diagnosis. I still have a couple of stone to loose but I’m going to do it ( hopefully by Christmas)

I'm going to start a new walking route on Monday it's an interesting place with some great views,I shall post a photo if it's a sunny day,not of me as I'm camera shy.I'm going to enjoy the fresh air,I need to get out of the house when I can,I did cycle about 8 miles on Saturday and I will cycle about 6 miles tomorrow to collect some jeans from a shop for my son that I had ordered online,I made a point of choosing to collect them from the shop rather than having them posted so I have saved money and will benefit from the exercise,I need to start doing something every day even if it's just a 10 minute walk.
