Wow! Where to start?
This feels like the first day at school :D
I suppose "hello" and thanks for letting me join the club.....
I am a disabled guy ("old duffer" according to the family) with limited mobility who recently developed Type-2 diabetes. I look forward to being part of this Forum and I'm going to need your help to beat this into remission......

Hi Joe and welcome to the forum. I don't want to disappoint you but you may well find you will have diabetes for the rest of your life. Just have to hope they find a cure one day.

Thanks!! I was hoping for a magic wand but just my luck I got the cane instead.... LOL!
Yeah I know I,m in it for life but I'll not let it get me down....

Hi Joe and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but pleased that you have found this forum where there is plenty of experience to help you along the way.

Whilst @Nomad722 is right that there is no cure at present for T1, there are a number of people who have managed to knock their T2 into remission. This has involved changes to their diet and increase in levels of activity. What you will need to do is find a way that works for your circumstances.

What advice have you been given so far from your HCPs? Are you on meds?
Have you made adjustments to your diet in any way?

Keep in touch and keep asking questions. People in here are happy to help in any way that they can.

Thanks for the advice Martin. I was diagnosed in March and informed last week..... My Hba1c 6.7% and I'm not on any meds. I am obease and trying to correct everything through diet.

At 71, it makes you wise!

Hi! Thanks for responding.
My HCP took 5 months to notify me after my last blood test came back with a Hba1c of 6.7%. We spoke about it but because I was prediabetic for a while I already had some knowlage of diabetes from this site. I'm not on any meds, but try to control everything via my diet. I'm on a low carb diet. I'm consuming arround 1000 carbs a day. Need to lose about 50Kgs

Hi Joe welcome to the forum. With the right info and a bit of determination you’ll soon get this beast under control. A few people do manage to kick this into touch, maybe you will be one of the lucky ones, most of us gain very good control . You
I am a bit of an old duffer too, their are a few of us in here so you’re in very good company 🙂.

Knowledge is power , so ask all the questions you need to about diabetes and we will do our best to help based on what has worked for us, you see diabetes is very individual in its likes and dislikes food wise, ie porridge, it’s healthy right , we’ll some if us dare not touch it with a barge pole as it shoots up our blood glucose (BG) levels.

At the top of the newbies forum you will find a thread called , useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes ( click on it)
I suggest you start with this very informative but long Letter

If you decide you want to test to find out how the various carbohydrates affect you so you can make informed choices , do ask your Gp practice first if they will provide a glucose meter and test strips,
Sadly it’s most likely they will say no.
The SD Codefree meter is the cheapest one we know of to self fund the ongoing cost of the test strips they are are around £8 for a pot of 50 where brands sold at chemists are £15+ for 50

Why on earth did they take so long to inform you .
6.7 % (50) in the not so new money is actually not bad 48 is the tip over point into diabetes. So it may be possible for you to gain control without Metformin.

6.7% equates to 50 mmol/mol, so you're only just over the threshold. I was more than double that on diagnosis.

Weight loss and diet are key to good diabetes management so I wish you well as you start your journey.

Martin
Thanks Martin

Who knows why they took so long? I feel if I put in the effort I can gain control of my Diabetes through diet as I'm just over the threshold.
My biggest problem is that I have Degenerative Spinal Desease, so mobility is an issue. Hence the lack of exercise, leading to hypotention, weight gain and now Type-2 Diabetes.

Yes it is entirely possible. Many here who have been on a variety of diets over the years without much success who later developed diabetes and lowered their carbohydrate intake found that they lost weight easily , in fact their have been quite a few occasions when folks have asked us how to stop the weight loss.

It’s carbohydrates we need to be careful with , we usually have no problems with protein and good fats, which is fortunate for me because I adore a nice strong Cheddar .
Speaking of food I expect you have been wondering what you can eat, possibly thinking of a lifetime of cottage cheese or worse with lettuce, yes,
NO !
We get to eat good tasty meals, snacks and the occasional treat. It’s just that for some things we need to find suitable substitutes or reduce the portion of that item.

Hello @Joe Bloggs and welcome to a great forum. We all do our best to support each other through good and bad, we try to be honest with each other and the advice and understanding floods in. It’s great to have people who understand as we all go through the same problems.
Sounds like you have a positive approach and this will hold you in good stead, we have all had to change our usual habits but we feel the benefit fairly quickly. As a fussy eater I still struggle with food. I have nevertheless managed to come off my medication and reduce my bg levels. The food you posted, sounded really good carb wise and if you carry on like that your bg’s and weight will start reducing.
Look forward to seeing your posts, we love to know how people are getting on. Best wishes x

No problem Joe, I think this site really helps people to carry on with the sometimes difficult transitions we have to make, I know I have definitely benefited from this and occasionally I have had a good moan because I was struggling but when you know people are truly wishing you well it gives you a little nudge back in the right direction. X

Hey Joe, welcome to the forum 🙂

The others have kinda said it but can I just check your carb target with you? Did you mean 1000? That’s an awful lot 😱 I stay around 100 max a day, less if I can. I cut out all potatoes, rice & pasta to start with, the only bread I ate was Burgen which is a lower carb soy & linseed loaf, until @Drummer told me about Livlife which is even lower & tastier at 4 carbs a slice!
Depends how you want to deal with your diabetes but testing is key to working out what foods work for you or not. You will find all you need to know here so do ask any questions you might have :D
