It would appear that the problem I have on my right leg is vasculitis, although from reading Dr Google there appear to be a plethora of types, so I'm unsure of the potential cause of mine. Sounds similar to hypersensitivity vasculitis, although what may have caused it is a bit of a mystery. Possibly an autoimmune reaction or an infection related to the injury to my shin. In addition to a rash I also have a somewhat swollen ankle and ankle joint pain. The nurse happened to mention it as she was changing my dressings on the shin wounds and said it was a 'circulation problem due to getting older', but I don't think so - will wait and see if the GP calls me after getting the blood tests back. I can't imagine it is due to a medication reaction as I haven't started anything new for over two months (apart from the levothyroxin).

Sigh! Can I be 25 again,. please? 😱 🙄
 
Blimey, @Northerner are you still having your shins dressed? That’s taking ages, are they behaving as they should? It certainly sounds like the vasculitis could be linked to the shin injury, if you’ve got swelling as well. Is it time to escalate this connection that the nurse made to GP level or beyond.

I actually made the appointment myself to see the GP last week (Appointment jeopardy) as I was wondering ewhat it was. At the appointment the GP didn't say what it was, it was just when I went to get my dressings changed that the nurse commented 'oh, I see you have vasculitis!' 🙄 It does seem likely that it is related to the shin injury, although it's odd that it has taken two months to materialise, and on the leg that was least injured.

Yes, two months since I injured my shins 😱 They are both healing well, but the cuts were very deep :( Might be another 2-3 weeks yet :(

Ah, that makes sense. I remember your appointment, but I got the impression the GP had been a bit vague. The diagnosis was obviously made and recorded, though. I think GPs sometimes waffle on in layman’s terms to the patient, and keep the medical tech to the notes. I recently got access to my notes, and looking back through, I noticed the time when I got antibiotics for the infected scratch on my hand that, in my GP's words ‘was looking a bit manky’, it’s down in my notes formally as ‘cellulitis/abscess’.
 
What did you do to your shins?! I hope they’re healed asap and the vasculitis too.
 
I am wishing you well too Northerner - it does seem to be one thing after another for you. I have had patches like this too where you never seem to be away from the surgery with one thing and another.so understand how it can all get a bit tiring. Hopefully all will be well and settled soon for you though.
 
The trouble with shins is the relatively poor blood supply, so healing takes a longer time. It’s the inflammation in the shins that has caused the ankle swelling, the excess fluid just drifts down under the influence of gravity. It’s a similar effect to that when you bang your forehead, you can get a black eye, because the subcutaneous blood drifts down to the first blockage.

Same with the vasulitis, the bodies repair agents have overshot due to gravity and bunged up some superficial blood vessels, causing further inflammation.

It’s sod all to do with age or diabetes, it’s just one of those things. And stop consulting Dr Google, you tell everyone else not to:D

I was walking down a very dark path after my eye operation last year and walked into something - still don't know what it could have been to this day as I've been up there in daylight and seen nothing that could have been responsible! I ended up with very deep gashes in both shins :(

I've totted it up and I have had 33 hospital and GP appointments in the last 6 months 😱 That's probably more than I have had in the past 10 years! 😱 Thankfully, all things that are treatable and don't impact me too much - I'm always conscious of the fact that others have this level of NHS engagement for far more serious issues.

Crikey! That was a close call! I had one too before my first cataract op. I woke up one morning to find my right eye completely whited out & got the cataract diagnosis as well as an expediated waiting list op of 3 months. During that time I was seeing an eye consultant at outpatients. It's very hard to judge distances properly with just one eye, especially speeding objects. Once around sunset I was crossing the road &, even checking VERY carefully because of the difficulty judging distance, I completely missed seeing an orangey/amber coloured car in the sunset glare of the horizon! I heard SCREECHING brakes while crossing: scared me $@%£ less; thought my number was up!😱:confused::( I told my eye consultant about it a few days later & she sped up my op even faster & had it 6 weeks after my first diagnosis!🙂

Sorry to hear this! I hope your latest issue gets cleared up soon. (I walked into metal pole last year through not looking😳. Blood everywhere and thought my nose was broken,pain off the scale. Mine was my own fault though)🙄
 
Oh dear, @Northerner . There's a blood test they can do for AI vasculitis, I had the est for ANCA antibodies, when I had the 30-odd tests ordered up by the Endo.

For ANCA, my antibodies were indeterminate, with no frank signs of it. The Endo was certain I'd have something AI.

I do hope you can get things sorted out.

Sorry to hear about that. I am not the only one who goes to Dr Google for stuff like that. Sigh we are human...
