Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone

I’ve had a rollercoaster few days don’t think I have any blood left inside me. Lol
So I’ve been diagnosed Type 2. Of course I’m blaming myself. I have appointment Friday with the diabetic nurse. Follow up appointment with th consultant. So I guess I’m being well looked after. I’m on Metformin 500mg x3 a day. They are testing me for something else as well I had to do a spit test. I’m just walking around in a little bubble. I’ve researched foods what to eat what not to eat. I’m an all or nothing kind of person. So thank you for accepting me. I don’t know what questions to ask. I was sort of given prescription by hospital Dr and shoved out. X

Hello @MrsC . Welcome to the forum. How did you come to be diagnosed.
I would like to try to reassure you that diabetes is a condition that can be managed well, mostly by ourselves with some input from medics/nurses and medication if needed but mostly by ourselves.

Did they start you off on 3 Metformin a day ? How are you coping with it.

I’ve not heard of the spit (saliva) Test , soi willleave that up to others here.

Hi

I went to my doctor loaded with symptoms as I had been feeling awful for a few months. I seen a student GP who took my symptoms done a few tests feeling glands tummy etc. Took urine sample. My regular doctor came in and took my blood sugar. Which showed 28. I had no idea what this meant..

Sent me to local hospital for blood tests seen by a few doctors. Sent home for a few hours to come back yesterday morning, so was diagnosed at 9am. After taking finger prick tests. My blood was ranging at the hospital from 12.8 to 10. Again this means nothing to me. So gave me Metformin x3 a day 500MG sent me on my way. So I’m just in limbo.

I think the spit test is to look at something called cushion??. Whatever that is.

Sorry - I can't think of anything offhand that might sound like cushion that it might be to do with diabetes, so that's most likely for something else the GP might think you've got. Have you got any kind of breathing or tummy problem or something?

Hubbys just said it’s not to do with diabetes. I’ve got loads of stomach problems. Which I’m hoping now with a good diet and exercise will subside, x

Cushing's disease can be tested for in your saliva - it's when there is too much of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood and can affect people who have taken steroids for a long time - amongst other reasons. That's the only thing sounding like cushion I can think of but I may well be wrong! Diabetes can result from untreated Cushing's as elevated cortisol levels increase blood pressure and blood glucose over time. Call for @mikeyB I think!

Thank You, it’s all so very new to me. I’m just so lost. It’s a shame the Drs haven’t the time to sit down with a newly diagnosed patient and explain everything is going to be ok,

You’re all so great on this page. X

Cushing's! obviously - that never crossed my mind. Yeah the saliva test would fit. Glad Flower has a brain LOL

Hi Mrs C, I have recently been diagnosed, and I too feel lost. I do agree I have just phoned the helpline and it has really helped to put my mind at ease.

I'd guess Cushing's syndrome. (The NHS's page doesn't mention high glucose that I can see. I'm guessing Cushing's basically because it sounds like cushion, I think.)

Hello mrsc and welcome to forum. It is daunting at first, but ask questions here and have a rant, moan whatever.no questions are daft. Someone’s will be along and post links to various sources of information
Take a breath and don’t listen to the horror stories and the media stories

Thank you all for your words. I’m looking forward to seeing the nurse on Friday. Get some more answers to my ever growing list. The hardest thing is changing my diet. What I can and shouldn’t be eating. X

I was diagnosed with type two just over two years ago, and I have had normal blood tests for eighteen months.
I am lucky that simply by cutting out high carbohydrate foods I seem able to stay at the top end of the normal range.

Hi @MrsC and @Mitti. Everyone goes through that stage of feeling low. I did too for several months before I joined here but the support from everyone has been overwhelming. Although natural, the fact of blaming yourself does not get you anywhere. You will feel lost but the fact is that you are not alone. Think about these forums as one big happy family getting through things together. Also remember that with the right diet/exercise that it can be controlled rather well. 🙂

Hi Mrs C. Don’t worry about the Cushing’s test. It’s just a belt and braces test to exclude other possible diagnoses for your symptoms.

And whatever else happens, it’s not your fault. It always takes time to adapt to a new diet and lifestyle, so if you stick around and ask as many questions you can think of, and you’ll soon be feeling normal again as the medicine kicks in. The tummy problems wil be worse on Metformin to begin with, but that usually settles down in two or three weeks.

The other possibility, of course, is that you might not be T2. Only time will tell, but I, and quite a few others on the forum developed T1 around your age - I was 43.

The main thing is to keep testing. Have you been given a blood testing kit and strips?

Hi MrsC.. Don't panic I know it can be over powering with all the advise, but it will all fall into place in time, as regards to what food is right for you, we are all different and some foods that suit me may not suit you, these things you will learn by testing, another I found that foods I would never eat in the past because I didn't like them ( like fish ) I now love fish and can't get enough of it 😱:D, another dislike was salad, now Give me a plate of fish with a green salad and I am as happy as can be. You will soon ease yourself into things MrsC, good luck.

John.

Hi everyone.
So the appointment with the diabetic nurse went well. She said no to a blood testing kit, (I bought one myself last week which I test morning lunchtime and nighttime) the numbers are high but I know they will come down. She talked about diet today and what to look for what to eat etc. She also talked about this page and said best page don’t look at others. She was a bit shocked that I’m on 1500 of medication metformin. Yet said keep taking them. My blood hubs is 78 (whatever that means) she said it’s rather high and it will come down. I had a little tear when talking about diet as I’m large woman. I’ve started exercise in December and I’m increasing the days, I’m determined to control this, she hadn’t received the results from the hospital so had to take my word for it. Again all your words are so comforting, a week in and I guess I’m still beating myself up for getting into this mess. Xxx
