Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
Does anyone have any problems with joint pain? Ever since I have been diagnosed (1 year), I've increasingly had sharp pains in my hip. I'm wondering if this is arthritis and whether this is connected with my type II.

Hi Bananas,

I do have some trouble with my knees! However this is due to something called Osgood-Schlatters which can make life quite painful at times. Possibly due to a penchant for running up and down hills. I don't know if your arthritis could be linked to diabetes. It would be worth asking that question next time you see your consultant.

Bananas - the first point of contact for your hip pain is your GP, as it may have nothing to do with diabetes. Generally, the type of arthritis that affects larger joints, including hips is osteoathritis. However, it could be other things as mundane as a new mattress, different commuting / amount of standing at work etc. Without knowing your age, I'm assuming you're a bit older than Tom, so Osgood Schlatters, which tends to affect knees, rather than hips, is most unlikely!

It is best to talk to your GP. It sounds like arthritis, but it may also be a simple as you need a new matress. Might pay you also to get your posture checked too as poor posture ca affect your joints.

Commuting affects my joints, especially if it is very over crowded and cramped and I have to stand.

Thank you for your replies. I hadn't considered things like mattresses, so something to look into thank you. I'm 42 and doing alot of work from home and studying as well, so very sedentary, so I wonder whether it is my general inactivity that is the cause (and I know it isn't helping the diabetes either). I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go to the docs about that as well, I hardly ever went to the doctors before this diabetic nonsense but still many thanks for your useful replies.

Bananas, do you by any chance take a statin?
If so worth looking up the side effects as some do cause dreadfull joint and muscle pains.

When I visited the hospital on Friday for insulin training, the specialist nurse asked me if I suffered from joint pain, I don't as it happens, but she explained that a lot of diabetics do

Cut out diet Coke, apparently, she told me, there is a sweetner, 'aspertine' (from memory) that causes severe joint pain in some people, so if you do drink a lot of it perhaps just stick to water for a while.

Try it anyway

Cheers

So does Lantus so be warned if you have been put on that.
The aspertine tale is just that, it makes interesting reading in snoops 🙂

Thanks for your useful replied. I went to the doctor today and asked about whether my statin is causing the joint and muscular pains and aches. He said no. Although when I next have a blood test he might check to see if there is anything affecting the muscles and joints. Which is all a bit annoying because I've never had anything like this before. The Doctor said it is just non-specific muscle/joint pain and take paracetmol. So I don't know really will have to see what happens. I always find going to the doctor/nurse quite depressing because they often say diabetes II is a progressive condition and quite a bad one because you don't generally feel unwell but the body is changing all the time. Hopefull this should spur me on to lose weight which is the best thing I can do.

Hi Bananas - Sounds like a positive consultation, with you going equipped with questions and getting answers, which doesn't always happen! You're right that reducing weight (assuming you are currently overweight?), is the best thing you can do to reduce the pressure on your joints - if walking / cycling / badminton etc aren't too comfortable, then swimming might be worth trying. Actually, cycling is usually OK with hip stiffness / pain, but not so good if knees are affected. Paracetamol is good for non-specific joint pain, but the intervals (1 or 2 x 500mg tablets every 4 - 6 hours) and maximum daily limits (8 x 500mg tablets) must never be exceded.
