What did you eat pre diagnosis?

I loved Cadbury's cream eggs too. I've had one since diagnosis & couldn't eat it. It was way too sweet!

Never been asked by anyone.

Seriously though folks, did any of the health professionals actually give you any positive help on what changes to make...?
No at all. Including having provided food diaries to people. Nurse just looked at it, turned away, went on to something else. Dieticien told me to eat more vegetables, not to manage carbs, and was all bothered because I had bacon once.

or have you only got to where you are today by educating yourself?
My HbA1c went from 64 to 48 with me doing nothing. I'm not where I am because I educated myself.

Oh, I was in hospital on iv antibiotics with a big infection when I was diagnosed. I still don't know how big a difference to my HbA1c that made.

I never never liked them. Far to sweet & not one bit of healthiness 😱😳
And I thought eggs were good for you.:D

Very rarely ate proper meal,
Ice cream,Farleys rusk,sweets,chocolate,donner kebabs 3/4 times a week,cakes,biscuits,
My dad used to say "Eat to live not live to eat" as well Heath ~ so I was fortunate to have been brought up on three good meals a day. After I married I continued the same routine throughout my life too. But alas, I failed to realise that portion size and the wrong foods would inevitably catch up with me and head me in the direction of Diabetes later in life. I once could eat anything and everything and not gain any weight either ~ and I too loved Farleys rusks!😛:(

My only real failing was having a sweet tooth and large portion sized meals ~ now I abide by the rule everything in moderation.

I used to eat almost anything pre type 1. Except for eggs unless they were the Easter sort..
A lot of carbs was always part of the plan, on the assumption that I was burning it all off.. then a couple of weeks immediately before diagnosis showed me what burning it all off was really like!
Cut back a lot now on type and quantity of almost everything..gradually building up to a reasonable balance, still not touching eggs though.

All I can remember is that my mum called me a picky eater. And I was always a very skinny kid (ah the good old days - would love to be able to call myself skinny now)
And we struggled to get the required 210g of carbohydrate into me for years after! It seemed such a massive amount compared to what I had been eating before.

Errrr - I am not actually very fond of Caramac at all - it just became compulsive every time I passed a tobacconist when my brain kept telling me it needed sugar !

I am always amazed at portion sizes served in restaurants and take-aways these days. ONE portion of chips from our chippy is enough for 3 adults, with enough over for me to have the few I might fancy. Ridiculous. Artisan (?) burgers served on brioche buns, each the size of a ruddy great plate. A 12" Sub. MacD's offerings so tall they are impossible to get your mouth across to take a bite of.

Caramac are the best along with topic

Immediately before diagnosis, quite a lot of Caramacs LOL

Nobody eats 100g weight of Weetabix, which is 13g carb per biscuit so you're suggesting the nurse would be telling people they had to have 4 of em for their breakfast - I don't somehow think anyone would say that!

Depends on your normal portion too of course - mine always was and still is, one - so with the milk is still hardly a carb fest even were I T2.

It's like a lot of things they used to do and now have forgotten how.

This may shock some folk - but I eat a Caramac bar every day. They are simply the best chocolate in the world. I buy multi-packs and have one after my evening meal every single night.

The dietician had me keeping a food diary last year for a while and I told her that.

She wasn't in the slightest bit bothered. "As long as it's part of the meal and not a separate thing later" which it wasn't.

I expected to get "what for" but she said it was quite ok.
