Understanding mmol/l results

Many thanks Northerner,
I went to the site that you suggested and I think now that I am on my way to understanding the differences between mmol/l and HbAc results.
It was an interesting site.
I should be seeing a nurse for the first time next week, so I will ask her about any more questions that I will probably have by then.

Will do Davein.

One question I do have, if you do not mind answering it, is that I am trying to follow the Dr.Mosley diet , but the last thing I want in this snowy weather is to be eating salad leaves with Avocado or some other veg. I am not that keen on it at the best of times, except when eating in an Italian Trattoria, preferably in Italy !!!!!
What I would like to do is look at the calories of each separate recipe and try to find something to match it that I like with the same amount of carbs and calories.
I have bought the book that you suggested " Carbs etc" so have a few recipes and known calories/carbs counter for each one.
I know that the point of Dr. Mosley's recipes is to balance the intake of carbs, protein and whatever, but I really dislike some of the food on offer :(
Should I battle it out for two months or so as he suggests or is changing some of the recipes a good idea?
This is all so new and I long for Spaghetti Bolognese and a piece of chocolate but will 'take the medicine' if that is how I will get on top of this.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Many thanks as always.
Regards Flora.

I can only give you my opinion and I'm sure others will offer theirs in due course. I myself have not suddenly altered my whole diet in one move. In fact I'm changing it slowly. If there is a particular food I dislike or one I feel I shouldn't indulge in, I compromise and have a very small portion of it. I know it's naughty but I figure as we are in it for the duration a little discretion won't harm us. So if you crave chocolate have one small piece occasionally, preferably dark.
There is a mass of information you have to get your head around which is going to take time. Different foods can produce different results for each of us. In the end it's down to a fair amount of experimentation and finger pricking🙂 It can also be hassle if you have family members to consider if you cook for them. Don't be too hard on yourself, as you say it's all very new to you at the moment.

I’m not that familiar with the Dr Moseley diet, Flora, but if you are looking for really tasty low carb recipes Tom Kerridge’s Dopamine Diet book is superb. I don’t use it a lot now, but I’m still addicted to his cheesy cauliflower mash for cottage pie. It’s heavily weighted to low carb, especially the sweets and cakes.

I have the Dr. Mosely book and must admit, not keen on many of the recipes. I hate avacado with a vengeance. If you love spaghetti Bolognese, look out for soya spaghetti. It's very low in carbs and not bad at all.

Thank you Davein, Mike B and Mike for your advice.
I suppose I am so eager to get on top of this that I have started a diet straight away, only seven days in !!!
I'll have a look for soya spaghetti. Perhaps my local Supermarket will sell it.
Looking at the weather outside at the moment, I think a nice soup would be in order instead of lettuce !
I bought the soup book too, so will make a start with cooking something hot and tasty.
Well done Mark for your achievement in getting down to HbA1c:36 That's Fantastic.
I only hope I can achieve the same with time.
Thank you. Bye for now.

Afternoon all,
Thought I would just let you know how my appointment with the Diabetes Nurse went. reading.
Having my feet tickled and pinged was a first, I must say, but all was good.
I had a lovely surprise when I asked the nurse regarding my HpA1c. I thought it read at 58 the first time I saw the doctor, but she showed me the chart
with all the readings and my reading was 50. Fantastic. I nearly cheered. I still have a way to go, but perhaps not as far as I thought.
The Mosley diet does seem to be working as I have lost seven pounds in two weeks.
Not sure what 50 equates to on the mmol/ readings? Anyone know that?? It would be nice to compare them.
Also, regarding the lancets -- are they reusable ( after a hot wash ) or just one time only?
Many thanks for any help.
Kind regards, Flora.

50 or 6.7% is good, it's in the target diabetics on meds strive for, well done. 🙂

It works out at an average on 8mmol/l on your meter.🙂

Strictly speaking lancets are single use but many of us re use them. I'm not aware of any one washing them.

Why are they contaminated? Mine never were! Use em till they are blunt - you aren't testing your blood down a sewer or in a hospital where the air is full of infectious diseases LOL

Ask your pharmacist how much a box of the appropriate lancets costs - usually 100 in a box, a years supply at least!

Can't believe they'd be more than a few quid?

I use a new one every time....if you knew where my body has been you would too *shudder*

The last time I bought lancets for my Dario they were about £3-50 for 100.

I also use them until they feel blunt, have boxes of them in cupboards.

I'm still on my first box of lancets I bought when diagnosed 2 years ago. I use the Accu-Chek with the lancet drums. I have 1 drum left so may need to order a new box by Christmas.:D

Thank you everyone for your replies to my query. I shall stop discarding my lancets and reuse them now.
Just wasn't sure about hygiene of the actual point/top of the lancet entering the skin, but all of you seem to have survived so far, so I'll crack on with reusing them.
Many thanks, Flora.

I like Michael Moseley's books but accept the recipes are not for everyone. I did not have a problem not eating pasta or rice and I like courgette spaghetti and cauliflower rice. I am not too bothered about constantly eating chocolates, biscuits, cake etc either. I accept this is not the same for everyone. My understanding has always been that, as long as you keep the "less desirable" foods in moderation you don't have to give everything up that you like. For example, if you like pasta maybe have a couple of spoonfuls rather than making it the main part of the meal. I am lucky in that I do love avocado.

There are some lovely recipes in the recipe section on this Forum.

Mark Parrot I too used to take a long time to use up my lancets: up to 3 years.

But, Jenny thanks to learning about blunting lancets on these forums, which I never knew before, I have changed to using a new one every time.

What a massive difference, in pain levels. I have very thin, soft skin on my fingers. I've been using the Softclix lancing device at the lowest setting for 17 years because it was the gentlest I could find: I hate the ones used in hospitals that hurt so much as they're for everyone skin type. I understand that & don't really mind as nothing is worse that having to prick again & again.

Added to the problem of delicate skin, I also have neuropathy now, diagnosed last March 2017, & I feel pain, heat & cold more intensely in my hands & fingers. A sharp needle every time minimises the pain SO much.

Afternoon all,
Can anybody tell me why when the last BS reading at night is taken and it is low: 5.5 or thereabout, in the morning, after not eating or drinking anything for over ten hours, my blood sugar levels have risen to around the 6.2 or up to 6.5.mark and appear quite high?
Is that normal?
Thank you .
