Good morning all.
I am recently diagnosed t2d and am still in the " read all I can stage" but am finding so much contradictory advice, much of it given by the nhs and nice.
I also have hypothyroidism and hypertension, diagnosed at the same time and told I was a risk for cardiovascular problems.
So, I have no idea about my cholesterol levels, having those checked next week, but I am assuming it will not be good and started looking at self help because I do not want statins.

The advice on this site says to use plant sterols that have been added to food, yoghurt, spread etc. But the advice from nice says these must not be recommended. Not just that they are of no help, but that we should NOT use them.

Does anyone know why? I have looked for the research but cannot find any.
And why does this site recommend them when nice say not too???!!!

Confused!!! About this and so many other things!!!!!!

Thanks to anyone who answers.

Yes, I am doing lchf and have found it very helpful. But was wondering about adding in plant sterols, perhaps in yoghurt. But now I am not sure.

I am also wondering about t2ds who do ot choose a lchf diet and have followed the advice on this site to use plant sterols.

What NICE says and what is best practice don't always coincide, for all sorts of reasons. I can't think of a single reason not to include plant sterols in your diet. The reason I say that is because plant sterols are in quite a lot of plants, so we've all been eating them for years - they just haven't been advertised!

Don't worry, you'll be fine.

Thanks!! I have no idea why they have said this. Its a very confusing journey so far. I think the fact that this site recommends them has surprised me.
Is this a government/ nhs run site? I sort of assumed it was.

Nope, we're independent and proud. I, for one, am done with working for the government. They never say thank you:confused:

Thanks mike. I didnt know that. Its still very confusing why the site promotes something that nice specifically say not to do. It would be ok if there was an explanation.

Welcome to the confusing world of being D.

Ha!! Its not good, is it!!!!

Nope, sure ain't.

Cant offer any answers to your Q,,

I'm rapidly getting to the stage where I will only visit the surgery for blood tests or any other proper and necessary actual treatment.

I have not much confidence or interest in the standard rubbish they tell you.

Is there a way to ask the site admim (not mods) this sort of question?

Thank

I am sadly and rapidly coming to think the same. Thank you.

Eating a stick of celery has no carbs. 😉. Welcome Kentoldlady 🙂

Welcome to the group, even after 17 years of being a diabetic the medical profession can still throw curve balls out to try and confuse one. D is not a one size fits all, it's individual to the person that has it, a case of finding what works for you the best.

Hi pav, yes, its not the D I am finding difficult. Its all the expert advice!

I read everything I can as well, but I just take the bits that sound sensible and reasonable to me. It's all YMMV after all. 🙂

A coordinated voice may be helpful, everyone has the right idea and wants to do the right thing, and, this is one of those situations where everyone is correct to some degree.

Thing is, who should a coordinated voice be speaking to ??
