I have struggled so much over the years had pretty good control 5 years ago was around 50 but gone downhill rapidly over the years. Had bad diabetic episode last week gave me the wake up call i needed. Any tips would be great.

When I was diagnosed I had already gone virtually sugar free 6 months earlier cos OH was diagnosed T2 end of September 2016 & I'd lost about 10kg in weight but the doctor said that going sugar free hadn't worked cos my bg was 111 so thinking about it the next stage was to go low carb which I did pretty much overnight. I found some nice low carb/low GI recipes cos we like cooking and we certainly like our food LOL. Now I very rarely eat breakfast cereal of any kind, no old potatoes, small amount of bread (I buy Burgen), no white pasta, no white rice. I eat eggs most days for brekkie, lots of berries & Greek yogurt, pears & apples and no added sugar yogurts. I still like to enjoy my evening meal so we cook most of our meals from scratch and I still drink red wine & G&T :D. I try not to snack between meals but that doesn't always work. But believe me, I'm no angel 🙄

BBC Good Food website have some nice low carb & low GI recipes.

Hi scoursebird, omg you readings are amazing, congratulations. my hba1c 3 days ago was 93, determined to get it down like yours. did you do this just following a low carb diet. i too am eating lots of berries and natural yoghurt, especially as a snack between meals and lots of mixed nuts like brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts which seem to satisfy me. i am seeing many people mention burden bread, why is this so good? will look out for it. keep up the good work!

Thank you, I was extremely pleased with myself, so was my nurse but she said she still didn't recommend a low carb diet - she did however tell me to carry on doing what I was doing!
I am taking metformin as well but I did go for it with the diet.

Burgen bread is lower carb than other breads and I think it's very tasty but my OH isn't too impressed (he was a lifelong confirmed white sliced bread lover) but he eats it if he's given it LOL. Tesco do a high protein loaf & Hovis have just started doing low carb bread but they are small slices.

I also got my cholesterol down from 7.8 to 3.9 🙂

All you can do is your best, lots of ideas and help on here from people who have been managing a lot longer than me but if I can help let me know. Best of luck and keep us up to date with your progress.

As I am going out this evening with the morris dancers - to the sea side, I just made myself a toasted protein roll, from Lidl - 29p and very low carb with lots of red Leicester cheese, and a mug of real coffee from the percolator with cream, and a few almonds. I will probably have something to eat when I get back, after all that sea air and exercise, possibly an omelette or courgette and some sort of meat.
I like to have large salads - a half or third of a pack of sweet and crunchy ready made salad, with creamy coleslaw and all sorts of light carb things - cucumber celery radish, fennel celeriac - with any protein source I fancy.
I eat quite a few mushrooms, also sweet peppers courgette bean sprouts, tomatoes cabbage and cauliflower, and a small amount of onion.
I buy the frozen packs of fruits - mostly berries, so I can measure out what I have without wasting any, but I do have fresh strawberries and sometimes grapes, but the large dark seeded grapes which LIdl were selling raised my blood sugars far less than the small and very sweet seedless ones they have in stock now - so we do need to check and adapt to slight alterations.
Adding strawberries and cream caused me to start to lose weight again - I suspect that I was not having enough fats to keep myself fat burning, and I was having dips in energy mid afternoon, as a result.
I could try harder to reduce my weight, but I want to have good blood glucose first and foremost, and also give my metabolism time to restore itself. I had been feeling very old, but now have lost about twenty years - I want to do more, but there is still a resistance to expending more energy - it might just be a lack of fitness, and perhaps a 66 year old should not try to rush around like she did in her 40s - but a bit of caution might be advisable, maybe wait until next spring before embarking on long treks, even with a bus pass.

The official line is "low fat, high fibre diet" that's what she said to me before telling me to carry on doing what I'm doing. My DIL is a GP in training so I'm going to have a discussion with her about the official line cos she knows I've been following a low carb diet and how well I've done so I hope she'll be a little more open to low carb diets.
