New to Diabetes UK despite living with type 1 for 33 years!
I am trying to find holiday or retreat that is built around type 1 diabetics. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I have searched Google etc but found nothing that's fits what I am looking for. A short break with some activity inc cycling, swimming etc but with a good hotel not a crappy dorm.

Any where in UK or EU would be great.

Thanks RJM ZERO

Hi - I've lived with the bugger for 45 years and can't see the reason why anyone would want such a holiday - so perhaps you could explain?

You can go wherever you want in the world and do whatever you want, so why does a holiday need to be built around the condition you happen to have?

If you are struggling/having difficulty with something about/around your diabetes - then please shout up - because there are resources available to help with all sorts of pretty random things - and not necessarily in places or under search words you or anyone else would use to Google for them. But if you say a bit about why you need this - then pretty likely one of our other members also needed it and found it .... wherever!

thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
I would like a week holiday with a diabetic nurse on hand or others who could help with managing my diabetes while doing some fun stuff with other diabetics.
aim would be to come home motivated and more informed about managing my blood sugars. there are lots of retreats for type 2 but not type 1, do you know why?

would diabetics join up for such a retreat. I remember as a kid I went on a few but when we hit 18 we are sent out into the world to figure it out. I know I would benefit for a motivating week with other diabetics but doing cool stuff and having a chance to talk about diabetes with others and not like a bunch of school kids with a teacher.

what does everyone else do when they get a bit off track or down about managing their blood sugars? cant just be me who needs a refresh and some help to get up and going again.

Thanks for the link, day looks good.
I am surprised about the low number of type 1's, we really are special!
I will keep looking, USA appear to have some great week long retreats for type 1 people like us. lots of cycling, horse riding etc with breaks ad understanding for blood testing and quality foods suitable for diabetics. let me know if anyone knows of any group holidays designed for this.

Surely though you are responsible for your own management not some complete stranger, after all you live with the condition 24/7 365 days of the years

Not a whole week, but on weekend 8 - 10 Sept 2017, there's a course for people with type 1 diabetes who want to learn more about sports, through practical sessions eg running, spinning (indoor cycling), football etc, plus talks, seminars, exhibition etc. Accommodation in a good quality university conference hotel. For details and link to booking, see posts in Events and Activities sections of this forum.

ok great, thanks to those of you for info and help on this. I have always felt that there is an element of "you should know" in the world of diabetes type 1. I think this is why I have stayed away from the community for the last 20 years.
I have travelled the world, lived new countries, ran business, raised a fantastic family and managed my diabetes as best as I could through it all. One thing I have learnt is that people achieve more when working together. I felt a meet up or holiday just for us diabetics might be a good idea. It does not invite the idea that we are less than no diabetics but embraces our lives are different to most others. The idea was not to pass the buck for some stranger to look after me but a little help and guidance in person surely is not a failure to manage ones owns conditions. Think I might craw back into the diabetes hole and avoid such telling off.
If anyone does get tired of living with diabetes and the roller coaster it can bring, would like a weeks support and fun please let me know as I will put something together. Nothing has to stop us in this world and when someone or something puts you down, use it to get up and get on with it. Sleep well everyone, no hypos or really high blood sugars tonight. Nothing better than waking up after a sound nights sleep as a diabetic.

I would love a week away with other diabetics and think it would be hugely supportive. I did look once like you and found only day outs and saw much more in USA. Please do let us know if you find something or create your own week away. I think it would be so much fun!

I think it's about more support and fun!

It wasn't a telling off, and I'm sorry you felt that way :( I was wrongly looking at your post in a personal way and in all honesty couldn't imagine anything worse for a holiday. :D

Ok, I'm on it now. Watch this space for something special.
I'm in the middle of laser and injection treatment on both eyes, I have all the motivation needed to put this together.

@RJM ZERO. Have you looked at the Leeds Beckett weekend I mentioned? I'm not sure how many places are remaining.

It sounds to me, RJM - very much like you haven't been on a formal, week long, carb-counting/dose adjustment course. Of course - you have to be engaged with your local NHS - and hopefully the hospital diabetes clinic - to ask to go on one or have it suggested to you if you haven't asked. So - you could definitely start there, couldn't you?

Not residential, but local and you attend during the day - then all the things 'they' think you already know will become apparent and you'll be able to learn. Lots of 1 to 1 and plenty of time for discussions and finding out how other T1s approach this that and the other - and you all share your results from yesterday each morning and see if you think anyone might have done something different here or there and got better test numbers and have a round the table discussion about them, summed up (and corrected if necessary LOL) by the DSNs running the course.
