Hi,

Just been diagnosed with diabetes today so thought I'd come here mostly to try and get some information about the condition and what the future holds for me.

I'm 31 years old and had some tests done a few years back but it ended up fine. Unfortunately, I've started showing symptoms again recently and went to the doctor for blood tests on Friday and got a call from them today to arrange an appointment. Managed to get a late afternoon slot and got the news there.

I know very little about the condition to be honest so will probably look around the site for information. Due to see my Practice Nurse on Monday next week so should know more after that.

Gerry

Hi Gerry, welcome to the group, I think you will find us knowledgeable & friendly.

What have you been diagnosed with T1, T2 or a variant? Did they give you any medication?

Hi Gerry and welcome. Do you know anything more about your diagnosis yet or will the Practice Nurse explain things to you on Monday? There are different types of diabetes so it's important to know exactly what's what. In the meantime, have a look at the resources on this site and give yourself time to digest what you read. If you have any questions....anything at all...just ask and someone will jump in and answer.

Welcome to the forum 🙂
Loads of lovely, supportive people here 🙂

To be honest I didn't half take it in. She was telling me one of the tests was 20 and it should be between 4 and 6 I think she said. She was also talking about something that's an indicator for the last 3 months was over double what it needs to be. Think I went into a bit of a panic as I was in for about 15/20 mins and can barely remember anything.

I'm not even sure. I think she was suggesting Type 2 but from reading the documentation she gave me it could be Type 1 as the symptoms have hit hard very quickly.

Medication so far is Metformin and Atorvastatin.

On monday make sure you go in with a notepad and pen and and any questions you want to ask the nurse. Make a note of the answers

I think that's 'normal'. I certainly came away from my diagnosis feeling dazed and wondering what on earth I was supposed to do now. You'll feel better able to take things in when you see the nurse on Monday.

Bless ya Gerryjo,

I'm only a few months ahead of you, but still new to this.
I suspect the 20 value she was talking about was your blood glucose level .... which is an instantaneous snap shot of where you are. The 3 ninth indicator she was talking about will be your hba1c level.
My advice would be look at the information on blood glucose levels and hba1c pages on this site. I'm sure they will explain it significantly better than I ever could!
These forums are a good resource and I still have many unanswered questions! Just ask!

Working on the assumption that you are T2 the following will help you get started..... T2's have insulin resistance i.e. we cannot efficiently metabolize the glucose we are consuming, hence the rise of BG (Blood glucose)

To help address this one of the first steps would be to cut or reduce foods high in carbohydrates like bread, pasta, rice, cereals & starchy vegetables, replacing them with leafy vegetables (i.e. veg grown above ground.). The dietitians are still stuck in the dogma of high carbs (but apparently good carbs), this doesn't work for many of us & we look to reduce carbs as much as possible. More on that will follow as you ask questions about diet & the various diet regimes we follow.

The next step would be to obtain a BG meter (you probably will not be prescribed one as the establishment thing that humble T2's are not intelligent enough to interpret the results), a good self-funded options is the SD Codefree from Amazon, worth starting out with about 100 test strips (or more). By testing your BG first thing in the morning then before eating & 2 hours after eating you will determine what foods make your BG "spike" & hence know to reduce or eliminate them from your diet..... a rise of no more than 2-3 MMol after 2 hours is ideal. Many of us react to foods differently so the testing is important to determine what works for you

Diabetes is not "one size fits all" each one of us is different & so we can advise but can't absolutely predict what will happen.

Thanks folks. Some great advice already. Tomorrow will be a day of studying and learning. I have a young family and they need their daddy in the best health possible. Fightback starts now.

Hi Gerry, I forgot to talk about exercise, very important in helping to achieve control.

Hi Gerryjo, Welcome. Try not to panic, whatever type you have with a bit of help , info and determination it's a manageable condition. We can help with the info and cyber support ,people here have helped me through some tough times.
Take a list of questions, pen and notepad with you on Monday.
In the meantime ask questions on here.
What symptoms did you have.
