Type 1
I have type 1 diabetes and had a below the knee amputation last year.
I'm finding it impossible to find anyone to talk about some things with. I'm a 35 year old man. Is there anyone in a similar situation I can talk to?!!!

Hi Rob , welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about your amputation, must be very difficult to come to terms with. Especially as you Are so young.

Hi Steph!
Yeah it's not great to be honest. I'm just struggling to find anyone who can answer (what I think) are fairly obvious practical questions.
Thanks for saying hello though, appreciate it 😛

Hi Rob I have only just come on here half an hour ago and I am sure you will get plenty of advice & support.

Hi Rob. Can't offer any advice on the amputation but wanted to say welcome to the forum. 🙂 How long have you had type 1?

Welcome Rob to the forum. Good luck with things. I knew someone who had an electric buggy & regularly travelled 5/6 mile there round the shops etc & then 5/6 mile home. Good luck 🙂

Welcome to the forum Rob. What aspect are you looking to discuss? General type 1 diabetes self management or coping with a below kneee amputation?

Hi! It was the amputation really. I'm a practical person and I've just got specific questions about things?! I mean without being too graphic I'm a young-ish man you know, leg on or off when I get lucky?? Lol that sort of thing
Been struggling to find anyone who can answer

35 years mate lol
Yourself?

30 years but I was 18 when diagnosed in the sixth form so luckily didn't have to cope with it throughout most of school which must be tough.

Mostly too young to get upset by it really Matt-you don't know any different really.
Sorry if too personal but you had any issues with complications?

No problem - ask away with any questions. 🙂 Luckily no serious complications although I have had the background retinopathy letter from the eye screening in the past which several people on here have also had. It's leaking blood vessels in the eye. The letter simply states 'try and maintain good control and nothing needs to be done at the moment, see you in 12 months.'

Although I tried my best my control in those early years may have been a little wayward on occasions. 😉 I started on the BM blood strips and waiting a minute, then wiping the blood off and waiting another minute before visually reading it against the colour chart on the tube compared with a few seconds and an accurate readout with today's meters it's no wonder control wasn't as good. 🙄

Yeah I've had that background retinopathy letter as well. I didn't look after myself for a while because it felt like such an intrusion on my life but feel like I've been heavily punished for it. If I'm honest the thought of going blind as well is simply too much for me to deal with, and every review I goto fills me with dread that something else is going to be chopped off/lost :(

You can't change what's happened but can only try and do your best now. 🙂

I have my two girls to think about which keeps me focused. 🙂 Is that your child in your avatar?

Your right Matt, I do the best I can now!
No that's my nephew, love him to bits though and gives me a reason to keep on top of things. Thanks for the positive words, I appreciate it matey
