Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I went and met my sister in London this weekend, and we got talking about when I was born, young, diagnosed, and growing up. She mentioned something to do with the size of me as a new born and linking it too diabetes.

It was kind of a passing comment but got me wondering if it did have anything to do with anything at all.

I was 12 pounds (Unlucky Mom!). Any other big baby diabetics?

Your poor mum - 12 lbs 😱

I've not heard this before. Millie was a very average 7 lbs 🙂

My Moms just about started talking to me after 29 years... Just about forgiven me now 😛

I was born normal-ish but then lost quite a lot of weight before putting it back on. So, erm, nope!

Theory rapidly going right out the window ! I stayed larger than your average guy until the 'Betes got me. I then became skinny Ben. However I did a good job at putting it alllll back on during my Uni years.

Now - Well we will call it a work in progress.

Gosh wot a whoppa you were! -mmm think H was a 71b 6

Benny don't tell your OH you were that big born - may make her a little anxious :D:D

She knows, Shes scared. She is a Twin. She is even scareder... 2 x 12 is?

There is a possibility that babies born to ladies with diabetes might be born big, but I haven't heard that being bigger at birth suggests a link with diabetes. I think I was about 8 pounds at birth.

Conversely I'm pretty sure I read a reaserch paper (fairly inconclusive) that looked at underweight babies who later went on to develop T1 to see if there was a link.

I think size is relative, my cousin is tiny so her two 8lb babies seemed huge and needed an operation to be born because her pelvis wasn't big enough. As far as I am aware neither of them has diabetes, although their maternal grandfather was type 2.

I haven't arrived at T1 yet, but there were two of us. I weighed in at 5lbs 8oz, twin was two ounces more.

Well from the evidence presented before me, I can conclude.. Hut Hum...

If when you were born you were somewhere between 4 and 12 lbs... Then you may be at risk of Diabetes..!

:D

I understood that if a lady has a baby with a high birthweight, the lady is more prone to diabetes - not the baby.

Suppose I should have guessed diabetes was coming - my "little un" was 10lb 2oz! 😱

My understanding is the same as Northerner's - there is a trend for women with diabetes to have larger babies.

I was the complete opposite - I was born a month premature. Not sure what I weighed but I think it might have been less than 4lbs. I've filled out a bit since then. :D

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes with my third baby, she was induced a month early and weighed 8lbs 3oz. My second baby weighed 10lbs and I am thinking that they missed diagnosing me with her!!

Wow, 12lbs! Mine were both 8lb 3oz and I thought they were big! I was 7 weeks early and weighed 3lb 8oz at birth, my brother who is also Type 1 was full term and only weighed 5lb.

I have often wondered the link too, I was born 11 lb and then was diognosed as diabetic when I was 11.
