Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is Ben I am 22 and about a year ago I was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2. I was not looking after myself and was not taking the metformin(pill format) i had been prescribed, my blood sugars got so high (over 40) that I had some kind of fit and went into a very delerious state, my keytone level was VERY high. I was rushed to hospital, and anyway, it was all sorted and am now looking after my diabetes. I am now on Insulin injection (3 times a day nova fast acting and 1 of the slow release) I am now looking after my diabetes and for the most part my blood sugars have been where they should be (between 4 and 7). I also excerise alot and am not overweight by any means... anyway, to get to the point. since i had the fit and have been on insulin injection (im guessing its a result of one of the two) I have been experiencing terrible confusion/nausia, its a hard feeling to explain, it is almost like a semi dream state that i go in and out of, it comes on and off and is effecting my everyday living.
I was wondering if anyone could help or has experienced the same kind of thing? I obviously told my diabetic consultant about my fit etc and they didn't really have much to say about it, not very helpful at all and was told that anyone can have a fit and they are not concerned unless it happens again, i'm pretty sure it was due to how ridicuously high my blood sugars were at the time. I am just abit concerned and frustrated because I do not understand why it is happening. Is it something completely unrelated to diabetes? Anyway, any help or advice you can give is appreciated! thanks people, Ben 🙂

Hi Ben, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you sure that you are Type 2? From what you describe it sounds like you may be Type 1. Do you test your blood sugar levels when you are feeling odd? If so, then what sort of levels are you at? If you're not testing then I think it would definitely be worth doing so you can determine whether it;s your blood sugar levels that are making you feel that way. I feel nauseous when my levels are high, and 'spaced-out' when they are low.

Welcome to the forums Ben 🙂

If you are a Type 2 I'll eat my sun hat!

Hi Ben. Welcome 🙂

i agree with Northerner, that what you describe, especially the DKA episode, sounds more like type 1 symptoms.

You do need to test your blood glucose (BG) so you know whether you're injecting too much or not enough insulin. It's a dangerous substance if you're injecting without any feedback.🙂

this is something i have wondered. I test my sugars daily and they have never been below 4, so i don't think i am type 1 although i have wondered. I am going to my consultant next week and I am going to speak to them about it. After my fit the hospital done brain scans and there is no damage so i dont think it is from that. It is just really frustrating that no one seems to know what it is... at first i thought it was a hypo but my blood sugars have never been below 4 (not to my knowledge anyway, i test my sugars throughout the day) so it can't be that. When my sugars go high (which is never higher than 11 since on insulin injection) i do not experience any nausia etc, it just seems to come on at random times regardless of whether my sugars are good or bad (and they are rarely bad since i have been on injection).
I have only been feeling this way since my fit and being put on insulin injection, which was about 2 months ago now. As i said my sugars are now stable raging between 4 and 7 apart from the occasional slightly higher reading which is rare these days.
I also thought it could just be a side effect of the insulin injections as i have only been on them for just under 2 months, I really don't know :S
But thankyou for trying to help and it is a really nice feeling to be able to talk to other people living with diabetes 🙂

Hi rob, my gut instinct is telling me I am type 1. But i thought type 1 was low blood sugars? And mine always been too high? It's all very new to me which is why i am seeking information and help 🙂 As i said before I have a blood sugar tester and they have never been below 4.
It is very strange because in the few months before my fit I was not looking after myself and sometimes sugars would be at highs of 20 and I did not experience what I am experiencing now. I will make a point to find out for sure if i am type 1 or 2 because the doctors have told me I am type 2 but they have never been very informative or helpful to be honest, not the ones I see anyway 😛 Thankyou for your help I really appreciate it 🙂 Ben

Side effects from insulin are very rare, although not impossible. I think you would feel bad all the time though if this was the cause. Do you carb count or do you take fixed doses, and how much, on average, insulin do you use per day?

Type 1 is an auto-imune disease where your body is slowly (or quickly) killing the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Untreated, it will lead to high blood sugars, DKA and eventually death.

Type 2 is usually described as a condition where the insulin produced by the body is no longer effective. Since the body is still producing insulin (usually lots of it) it doesn't usually lead to DKA.

Although, there are plenty of exceptions to the two general descriptions.

Are you on any other medications?

I agree with the others it sounds like you are type 1. I only get Hypo's when I either skip a meal or I accidently inject too much insulin so just because you haven't been below 4 does not mean your not Type 1 it could mean you have been lucky and/or controlling it very well.

I had the same thing as you, my levels got so high I was hospitalised (I didn't know I had Diabetes at the time)

I cannot help with your wierd feelings as I only feel weird when I'm either too high or too low... I would just keep naggin the doctors and get them to do thier jobs and find out what is causing it! Maybe get a second opinion as my doctor said there was no chance I could possibly have diabetes and the next day I was hospitalised!! So I tend not to trust 1 doctor hahaha 🙂

Anyways welcome and I wish you luck!

I am on 10 units of fast acting insulin injection, 3 times a day (after eating) and I am on a slow release injection which I take late evening which is 12 units, one injection every evening.
I am not on any other medication, it does sound like I am type 1. My consultant told me that it is possible because my pancreas is producing hardly any insulin or none at all, but has not actually given me a answer. I will be sure to find out 🙂
I didn't realise you could have high blood sugars and still be type 1 so thanks for informing me 🙂 I am going to consultant next week so i am determined to find out for sure what type I am
As i said before my blood sugars are under control now which is the main thing!
Thanks so much for your help people I really appreciate it and I will keep you posted on what happens 🙂

Must admit, I am surprised that you appear to have such good control on fixed doses, and the same doses for every meal. What slow-acting insulin do you use?

Oh and also, should I be concerned about the fit? what is DKA? my blood sugars are under control so i'm assuming it won't happen again aslong as my blood sugars are good? Thanks people 😛
