Relationship to Diabetes

Having just found out there is an increase on cigarettes via the budget. I have to ask does smoking affect diabetics. I am a non-smoker but I thought I would ask...

It increases the risks of heart attack and strokes etc, so on top of the already increased risk that comes with diabetes its not too good, so no direct effect, just added risk...........

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do if you have diabetes. It is a big contributor to cardiovascular disease, so you double (or more) your risks if you smoke AND have diabetes. Also, the carbon monoxide in smoke has a detrimental effect on blood sugar levels. And it's expensive! 😱

Good luck to anyone wishing to give up smoking.

I have this image of coal black lungs in smokers...

Yes it does, I gave up the horrible weed just over 2 years ago. It affects the heart and stopping smoking is the single most important thing a smoker can do to live longer. Even if I didn't have diabetes, I still would of given up, as my child's health and welfare came first. Sheena

A friend of mine used to say kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray🙂🙂🙂

In a few month I will be off the fags a whole year................I still really fancy one now and again though...........:(

Well done you are doing really well, it is hard, I know, sometimes even I feel like that, but walking past a smoker .........well the smell is disgusting😡

It really depends on who you believe the most!

See there is only one type of lung cancer that is directly linked to smoking out of 13 different lung cancers... Strangely the Roy Castle foundation nor his family will release information which one of the 13 types of lung cancer he suffered from!

It said that every element suffered by main is linked to smoking, Personally I think a lot of links suggested is boulder dash...

Yes smoking does some damage but if it did the damaged that it's said to do, how come the human race is still here!!!!!

Oh, raising tobacco duties will save the nation and help the treasury out is again boulder dash, it will just cause a lot more hardship for those who can't give up, it will cause more crime due to the 'black market' will get more lucrative... So it will not only effect collection of money, as more and more people go to the black market to meet their tobacco needs and those who are selling on the black market won't be paying income tax..

Ellie, we all know the harm smoking does to the body, it's a fact. I have to go to Guys hospital because of my receeing gums mainly due to smoking. My neighbours brother ( who is not diabetic) has had his lower leg removed due to smoking and he will not give up, my neighbour, this mans brother smokes as well and he is now walking with a stick because his legs are being affected as well and he said to me'Nobodys telling me to give up smoking, even though he has a wife, children and grandchildren, he's in his late forties btw.
Tia's daddy, has COPD, due to smoking and hasn't got long to live, with other medical problems, SO if you would like to see this man, of 58, lying in hospital from January, who cannot breath properly or even talk properly now, then be my guest, it's a pitiful site. Denial is only a way of turning a blind eye and not owing up to what is really going on. It makes me bloody mad :(

Hear hear Sheena

My Mum has never smoked, she was not born with asthma, but has very bad asthma since her 60's - she worked in small enclosed offices for many years with heavy smokers-of course we have no 'proof' that is what has caused her asthma but she (and Roy Castle come to that) weren't given a lot of choice in what air they were breathing in.

Any body who wants to smoke is welcome to (I have in the past - never in my Mums house or her company - usually down the pub - I have not smoked for 20 years) but don't force it onto other people. And as for the price going up - so is everything

I feel sorry for the people who find it impossible to give up food cos the price of that's gone up too - luckily I gave up eating years ago. 😱

I agree with you there, if people want to smoke then it's their choice, just don't go spouting out drivel about the non affects of smoking. NOT everyone who smokes will end up with a debilatating lung condition, NOT everyone who is a heavy long term drinker of alcohol will end up with liver problems........ but a large majority of people do end up with these dreadful diseases. It's shocking to see. Sheena

LIke Prof Jones the Geneticist says ... If everyone smoked, Lung cancer would clearly be seen to be genetic.

A parallel with Type 2 Diabetes ....if everyone was Obese, Type 2 would clearly be seen to be genetic.
