Hi all,

Yet again I've been having a conversation with a neighbour, and yet again this question was asked '' Will Nathan not grow out of being diabetic?'' ....AAARRGGGHHHH.. This is'nt the first time this question has been asked, I've lost count of the actual numbers...But in 2yrs 4mths and 3days...it still amazes me, and leaves me as frustrated as the first time it was asked.

What is wrong with people?????...I do allow for some degree of ignorance but the year is 2009...not 1929....Why do we still not have in place the proper education of people???...

Maybe DUK should be channeling there efforts to this cause rather than printing, idiotic letters..statements from supposingly health care proffessionals.

Bravo Heidi , well said !!!! what about education for these total idiots !! this makes me so angry , in this day and age as well. I was asked last week why I didnt stop taking Insulin if it gives me hypos !!!!! FFS !!! ARGHHHH 😡😡

Mind you the Fit For Life campaign...did'nt help either....Until it was changed...but the damage had already been done...the next day at school Nathan was subjected to '' Your diabetic because your fat''

This country is run by a bunch of Muppets!!!.......😡

But thank you to all those who got the campaign wording changed🙂

Yet that one I have had and I just sit there kinda dumbfounded and wondered why I even bother!
 
its the total lack of knowledge and partly ignorance just grit your teeth hun and go and take it out on the credit card x:D

I have been asked do i have the low sugar diabetes or the high sugar diabetes.

I have been off school this week feeling very down and levels been all over the place. I text my mum to say I hadn't had a hypo today and that I haven't gone under 9 today. She replied she thought I was low the other day so how can that be. Bless her.
 
The worst thing I hate is when im eating a biscuit or a chocolate bar, someone will turn round, look at me and say "should you be eating that?!"

grr thats what insulin is for, everyone just thinks thats you cannot eat chocolate!
 
i did have a few work friends ask me what diabetes was and how i could do all thge stuff i can do??? i told them that diabetes doesnt actually stop me from doing anything they can do. after that they seemed to just leave it be till i had a hypo after a very stressful day and then they flapped big time and dint realise what i needed to do. the company i work for then decided it was better for everyone i work with to know how to deal with a diabetic and trained everyone to deal with it.
 
I all boils down to education and why are'nt people getting it the correct way.
I personally thing it should be law that every school, work place etc should have education days and all that attend are given a pass certificate.

I have even been asked...''Where did Nathan catch it from?'' and '' So he's allergic to sugar?''

Well, when I was diagnosed, at age 49, it meant very little to me when they said I had diabetes - maybe partly because I was 'out of it' with DKA, but even so I knew very little about the condition. I consider myself very well read and interested in all sorts of things, but knowledge of diabetes was extremely sketchy to say the least, so I'm not really surprised that most people know very little about it. When you think about it, we all pretty much know about heart problems, asthma, stuff like that, but diabetes affects a huge number of people, so education ought to be more of a priority - not just 'if you're fat you'll get it', which seems to be the best message they feel they can get across.
 
My boyfriend is a policeman and only the other week they had some training on how to help a diabetic and what signs to look out for if someone is going hypo. Luckily he knew all the right answers.

My school where i work don't seem to have any understanding of diabetes and I feel most discriminated against when the Headteacher has doughnut days!!😡 I don't even get so much as a piece of fruit.

This is the worry....diabetics who are having a hypo are often mistaken for being drunk....so this area of police training is vital..but it should stop there everyone needs this training in every profession and walk of life.

As for your school.....Nathan is a pupil in a large secondary school...and up until recently...last week infact...discrimination is an understatement...again all teachers need this training

We have a student at school who is diabetic and I always look out for him. I even had to insist that he be allowed to take something into his exam, incase he became hypo. I was also covering a lesson when the fire bell went off. All students are supposed to leave their bags behind but I made him take his.
 
It seems to be one topic that I think every person with diabetes, every person that cares for a person with diabetes (wife, parent, sibling) can associate with.

On her Diabetes Blog, Kerri Sparling highlights similar feeling and some great "one liners" that really show how ignorant the public are. More worrying is the ignorance from so called Health Professionals - see thread ref: Nurse and Injections.

Need we say any more.. I think you just have to grin in bare it!! :D

Well...I wish there were more teachers like you in the education system..Lorraine..I'm sure his parents are appreciative for what you did...I know as a mam I would be.....:D
It is against all guidlines and the Disability Descrimination Act...What was the act passed for if it is not being applied especially in schools...Personally feel its down to funding...diabetics dont fall into the category for schools getting extra funding for them

Haha that's a good one. You have a choice of replies then. "No it's a regular diabetes" or "No it's the light diabetes" as in "You want fries with that" American talk for diets.

Perhaps the law ought to be changed so that schools that don't look after ANY and ALL diabetic students/staff, or any other medically sensitive children, they lose a large chunk of their normal funding. Not any special funding for health care for students/staff but their general budget. Schools might find it financially worth it to take more care of diabetics in their care then. 😎
 
I agree it is very annoying, for me it was worse at first people thinking ooh what can't you eat, I'd reply raw eggs! Now as I'm more used to it I still find certain friends still react in a similar way, I guess some people are beyond help!

Hi Marc

I totally agree with this point...I saw a news article the other week...that were trying to block diabetic children from attending or making it extremely difficult for those who were already in the school..regarding medical provision etc...that eventually the parents had no option to move their child to another school..

There's a phrase for this kind of thing, "complete and utter........." 😉.

As has been mentioned in this thread perhaps someone ought to mention the Disability Discrimination thread to schools like this. Perhaps parents with diabetic children would like lawyers or solicitors to mention this to the schools for them. 😎
