Hi everyone

Went to see the practice nurse yesterday, I've managed to get hold of a meter & strips myself. I asked her about self testing she said not to bother I'am type 2 & taking 500mg of Metformin once a day. She wants to said me on some thing called Desmond now ? I have found out that in the morning my DG are high can be up to 17/18 1 hour after some porridge. I'am now very confused should I be self testing or not

Hi Muzzie.

If you weren't testing, then you'd never know that porridge sends you that high (which is way too high) so I think it answers itself.🙂

Your nurse probably thinks testing is only useful to avoid hypos. For some reason they don't consider high BGs on a regular basis to be worth avoiding, which is really silly.

I would say ignore the nurse, keep testing, write everything down that you eat, the amount and any test results you get, both before the meal and either 1 or 2 hours after, so you know what to avoid or how much of particular foods you can tolerate.

Hi Muzzie,
I'm new to all this and have also been told not to test. However, its important to regain some control; I bought a tester and have found out, I too cannot tolerate porridge - I had a bowl this morning with blueberries and my sugars shot up; same with reduced fat/sugar baked beans. Its a very long process testing but will be worth it in the end. Amanda x 🙂

Rob is spot on about testing I'd say

DESMOND is a course to introduce you to lots of info about T2. Not sure if anyone here has been on it. The name is one of those acronyms, the only bit I can remember is Newly Diagnosed at the end!

Hi Amanda

I glad I'am not the only one porridge dose that to, I've found 2 slices of burgen bread toasted + marmite is better. I'am going to keep testing. I think it just penny pinching they tell you not to test. I don't want to be told in 10 or 15 years time, if only you had tested from the start. I also need to feel I have bit of control over this for my own peace of mind. Murray 😱)

I'm actively encouraged to test (although only twice a week). I have the same problem with porridge and don't know how else I would have found out.

Thanks for that

Make's me mad I now if I do this Desmond course one of the first things there going to ask is are you self testing, but providing strips on prescription is a NO NO for type 2😱

Muzzie501 That's my point if your told not to test how are you going find out about these thing I could have been eating porridge for three month's, then been told my HbA1c is still way of ?

I am 100% convinced it is down to cost saving (and perhaps a little ignorance).

I think testing is important for only so long as you are gaining useful knowledge though. Initially, I tested every day for around 6 months. More recently I only test rarely. In fact my last pot of 50 test strips was bought over a year ago and I still have three strips left.

We must be on the same wavelength - I had a slice of burgen with sliced tomotoe this morning and a handful of cherries. Haven't tested yet but hope its a lot better than yesterday's porridge 🙂 I buy my testing strips from Ebay - alot cheaper than a lot of chemists. It is all about being in control and taking one step at a time; much happier now I have a tester. Good luck and keep in touch Amanda x 😉

Hi Andy,
Taking advice and testing immediately before and an hour; 2hrs later. So far found out baked beans (reduced/fat/sugar) and porridge spikes my bloods - so have cut these out. Now trying the Burgen bread so finger's crossed. Value your opinon.....

Hi Andy

I feel the same way I'am going to test until I feel I've got my head round it, after that I'll test just when i think theirs some thing wrong. I think it's just that I don't like being told want to do when I can see the benefits 🙂

I think, as others have already said, if you like some foods which spike you, then try smaller portions (for a while I only used 3 dessert spoons of porridge oats). Mind you, if you lose weight then don't assume that something you tested months previously will still have the same effect. I find I can tolerate 5 dessert spoons of porridge oats now (I think that equates to around 50g) plus other assorted 'naughties' with it!

Always a very positive attitude to take, in my opinion. Well, so long as we're right! 😉

Andy 🙂
