Once again I'd agree with Mike. Lots of things can affect our readings. For e.g earlier this week I ate exactly the same thing 2 days running. On the first day my levels stayed between 4 and 5 all day, even after tea. The next day, however, I was 6.5 before tea and went up to 8.9 after. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't have a great amount of sleep the night inbetween as I worked late and had to be up early to look after my grandson.

So don't be too quick to blame one moderate high reading on any food in particular. Try it again now you are less likeky to panic about the results. (Stress can also elevate levels) You might even be fine with the bread OR the beans but not together. It's a funny old game this diabetes lark!

By the way, you're not likely to feel any effects from 10.9. It's not really high enough to make itself felt. I find I don't notice high levels til I get in the high teens and then I just feel a bit tired and thirsty. That's one of the reasons we need to test to keep an eye on things as high levels can just creep up on us un noticed. XXXXX

I'm just finding the whole experience scary :(

You will get more confident with experience. If you've never had a reading as high as 10.9 before you are doing just great. Remember there are thousands of people out there who don't even know they are diabetic. You know now and you are doing your best to control it. That attitude will keep you well and safe.

Before you know it you will be giving advice to others. And you will be controlling your diabetes, not it controlling you. Be kind to yourself and try to stop worrying so much. Some of the memebers on here have had diabetes for years and years. We have it a lot better these days than some of the older memebers did. We have test strips and better meds. Most of all we have the support and information on here. We will help you get things in perspective and relax more. 🙂 XXXXX

Thank you for your kind words; I think today just shook me. There are a lot of things that I am grateful for; its a learning curve which I'm slowly, very slowly, getting the hang of. I just need to focus on the positves. Thanks again for your kind words - they mean alot. Amanda xx

I think you are doing fine - but don't let it all scare you. I take the opinion that diabetes is just a naughty child. You are still loosing weight and that will improve your numbers with time.

But the fact everyone has a slightly differing response to foods is one of the reasons that it is good to test and why a "one size fits all" advice approach just doesn't work.

I think my highest reading was just below 17 after a breakfast of shredded wheat and dried banana coins!

Thanks Mark; I'm trying to vary my foods hence trying the baked beans on toast because I know its a life-long condition and I can't live on tuna and salad alone. Mind you I did have had tuna salad tonight (and chopped in 2 new potatoes) and 3 tablespoons of fruit salad in juice (hope the fruit /potatoes doesn't spike me - couldn't bear 2 spikes in one day). I tested just before dinner 5.4 that was about 10mins ago. I might just test 2 hours after instead of 1 and then 2 hrs after. What do you think? Amanda x

I tend to test at 1 hour after only, because I believe that aligns to the peak of my blood sugar. If you read Gretchen Beckers book then I think she says test after 1 hour as well. But formally the NHS advises to test at +2 hours I think.

Actually you reminded me to go look at my PCT's guidance and that gives a blood glucose target of < 11 mmol/L after meals. So you were inside my PCT's formal guidance. By personal choice I run to much stricter limits.

Thanks Mark, I'm going to test 1hr after and if it runs high then do a 2hr. I'm hoping my dinner of tuna salad and fruit salad won't be high but will let you know. DN nurse told me not to test and I don't want to become obsessive about it because the whole process is making me anxious. Amanda x

meal tonight

Prior to dinner my reading was 5.4.

For dinner had:-
Salad
Tuna
New potatoes (small x 2)
plenty of mushrooms and a couple of sliced cherry tomotoes

3 tablespoons of fruit cocktail in juice

2hr reading after 7.5

Rise of 2.1. So after my earlier 10.9 this is much better......

Post meals should be between 7-9 is that correct

Amanda xx🙂

Wow Amanda! Those are just great readings 🙂

If you keep those up, and even sprinkle in a few 10's you'll be doing an excellent job at giving your long term health the very best chance.

Try not to get anxious about occasional high readings. There are no bad results, just information to help you make good choices.

Dont forget that if your overall control is good, you can let your hair down and give yourself a treat every now and then. Helps to make being 'careful' all the rest of the time much easier 🙂

Just catching up with the thread Amanda and I must say those readings look pretty darn good to me! Well done! :D

You hit the nail on the head when you said this is a life long thing so you need to be able to keep it in perspective. As Mike said you will be able to let your hair down once in a while and take it in your stride if you keep getting readings like you have today....even WITH the 10.9.

Now, try to relax. You are doing great! XXXXX
