I was asked this question earlier today I will get the answer tomorrow, Which competitive sport burns the most calories in a match?
Has anyone any ideas?
I was told that it is not football ? rugby ? or hockey.

All depends on your starting weight Andrew. The more weight you carry the more calories burned.

Found this that may be of some use to you?

Personally I would run 🙂

I think the question is a little ambiguous.

Are we talking total calories for the extent of the match or the rate at which calories are burned during the match. It also may depend how many players there are. In tennis it's only two or four, but football they've got 22 plus substitutes.

I can see some sports which are low burn but end up using lots of calories because the match is longer. For example, they must burn quite a few calories playing 5 day cricket, even the guys just standing around in the field!

Anyway, I'll plump for ..... water polo.

Andy 🙂

What Andy HB says. Need unambiguous info.🙂

But I reckon basketball.

Rob

Is it squash, it was listed in a mag once against a few others and it came out on top for cal burning over an hr.

calories burnt

I undestand that it is total number burnt by each player over the duration of the match. Apparently it is associated to the sport which is physically the best exercise you can under take. I will be told the answer tomorrow.

Nordic skiing is often stated as the sport that uses the most calories. Admittedly, there aren't nordic skiing matches.

Water polo matches are relatively short:4 x 8 minute periods in the Olympics.

In many sports, the calories expended will depend on the position played.

Marathon? Triathlon? Decathlon?

Tour de france? What are we counting as a 'match' here 😉

I would go for Rowing, Squash or tennis (singles). A 5 set singles match takes some doing!:D

I'm going to have a second guess of kabadi. 😉

Does anyone remember when Channel 4 used to televise this game? I found it fascinating!

Andy 🙂

swimming ,- it takes 4 times the energy to swim the same distance as on land!!!

Like Mel, I'll go with swimming.

However if you really think about it-it's the exercise you enjoy the most, because you'll be willing to continue it on a consistent basis.

When do we get the answer Andrew ? 🙂

Rob
