ACRONYMS!! those abbreviations that everyone uses and I don't know what they mean!! Please can someone tell me what some of them are??

Not sure exactly which you mean, but here are a few...

BG - Blood glucose
FBG - Fasting blood glucose
QA or RA - your fast-acting insulin
NR or Novo - NovoRapid
A1c - Shortened version of HbA1c the blood test that checks average BG over 3 months
D - sometimes used for Diabetes
A-Z(!) - occasionally used for names (esp of children)


FWIW - For what it's worth
AFAIK - As far as I know
ISTR - I seem to remember
OP - Original Poster
OH - Other half/partner
BTDT - Been there, done that (read that one for the first time yesterday!)

Is that the sort of thing?

I'll start with

DSN --> Diabetes Specialist Nurse
BS --> Blood Sugar

SIL --> Sister-In-Law (that took me a while to work out!)

Any particular ones bugging you, by the way? 🙂

DSN = Diabetes Specialist Nurse
DUK = Diabetes United Kingdom
DESMOND = Diabetes Education Self Management Of Newly Diagnosed (I think)
 
D/E --> Diet and Exercise
Dx --> Diagnosed (in my sig)
Sig --> Signature 🙂
 
Oh yes SIL is a good one (see also FIL MIL and BIL 🙂 )
 
DP - Dawn Phenomenon
CHO - Carbs/Carbohydrate
CP - Carbohydrate 'portion' typically a unit of 10g CHO
 
MDI = Multiple Daily Injections?

LADA-Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults
MODY-Maturity onset diabetes of the young

GI - Glycaemic index 'low GI' food is absorbed more slowly
GL - Glycaemic load

IMO or IMHO - In my (humble) opinion
LOL - laugh out loud
ROFL - rolling on the floor laughing
LMAO - laughing really quite a lot
OMG - Oh my goodness (or similar)

HONK Hyper Osmolar Non Ketotic acidosis ( Type 2s )
HHNS official scientific term for above ( very complicated term !)
IR Insulin Resistance
NICE National Institute for Clinical Excellence ( i.e. Quango in charge of cost cutting)
SIGN Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network ( Caledonian version of NICE)

CHD Coronary heart Disease
CVD Cardio vascular disease
CHOL Cholesterol
HDL High Density Lipid ( "good" chols)
LDL Low Density Lipid ("bad " chols)
VLDL Very Low Density Lipid
Trig Tryglyceride

BDA British Diabetic Association ( aka Diabetes UK)
ADA American Diabetic Association
JDRF Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund
DM Diabetes Mellitus ( the official name)
IDDM Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus
NIDDM Non-insulin dependent DM


Not many acronyms in that lot,mainly initialisations, but ....

BS is also "bull something" ;-)

YMMV = your mileage may vary
TLA = three letter acronym
DOS = Disk Operating System
WTF = What the flip
RTFM = Read the freakin manual

CGM/CGMS - Continuous Glucose Monitor(ing System)

Oh and YMMV is also sometimes YDMV - Your Diabetes May Vary
