My winky is sore - Please Help !!

Type 1.5 LADA
Ok - Ok - so I'm a newbie. Embarrising issue but here goes. I was misdiagnosed with Type 2 since Oct 23, but a test identified 3 anti-bodies recently and I'm now diagnosed LADA Type 1. I've been taking my insulin for about 3 weeks and my levels are gradually coming down from 20 which was normal for me pre insulin - to around ten or so as my education improves. (Abasaglar and Novorapid)

Hats off to all of you long sufferers BTW - It must have been impossible before this technology. I'm very lucky to have Type 1 in this day and age. You have my respect !

Anyways - Here I am - Aged 52 with a sore winky !! and it hurts !!. I haven't been putting it anywhere strange so I'm confused and embarrased !! I'm reading that this is likley to be a yeast issue and it's quite common?

My missus bought me some 'Canescool Intimate Care Sooting Cream Gel' - but if I'm honest - It's not really helping. Weeing isn't a problem atm - It's just sore tender skin.

So before I arrange a doctors appointment and 'drop em' in that awkward manner, I thought I'd ask here as I'm sure it's a common issue and hoping someone can advise EXACTLY what cream will sort it out.

Many thanks - Looking forward to sharing some stories as we all deal with the challenges of Diabetes together !! Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum, and well done getting to grips with your diabetes control.

If you have been running high for a long while both yeast and fungal infections are likely, but only a doctor will be able to diagnose, based on a physical examination and perhaps tests. Once they have a diagnosis they'll be able to prescribe a treatment.

Don't be embarrassed, you haven't done anything wrong and the doctors have seen all sorts. The sooner you get seen the sooner you will get better.

Ask your local chemist/ pharmacist for advice. That could prove quicker than waiting for a GP appointment or e-consult at your Surgery. Otherwise I fully agree with @Carlos; to get the right treatment, onitment or antibiotic, may well need tests.

my hubby had the same problem a few years back when his T2 was untreated and his BS had been high for some time he was prescribed Canesten cream and It worked really well.

Could you use the medical terms for body parts to help? I’m guessing your name suggests you’re male so it may be your penis that is sore, but I don’t want to assume as you could be female with alopecia or a choice to be bald, or you could be transgender male with female anatomy etc. If something is painful that you don’t think should be painful you’re best off seeing a pharmacist or a healthcare professional.

I’ll start with a huge caveat - I have no medical training. And even if I did, like everyone on the forum, I cannot provide medical advice.
So, anything I say will be a guess based on knowledge I have picked up along the way.

I can think of two potential issues.
- yeast infection as you have been considering. This will be due to your kidneys filtering out the excess glucose in your blood resulting ina sugar wee which bacteria enjoy.
- neuropathy. When we have high BG for a prolonged time, it affects small blood cells such as those in eyes, kidneys and “extremities”. Some people experience a similar but temporary issue when their BG drops quickly. I have read about retinopathy being caused this way and affecting eyes. This is what I am thinking may be your issue with your winky. It could be worthwhile Googling this to find out more.

I admit I used to regularly need to buy a similar cream, I think many years ago I even had it on repeat prescription (when my levels were poorly controlled)
as yes the infection can be caused by amongst other things high sugar levels leading to infection of the “as you called it winky” @Type-1-Baldy

Winkys and their female equivalents can be prone to thrush and general soreness /itchiness for several reasons.
The recent hot weather coupled with your high sugars leading to glucose being peed out, all enclosed in a warm and sweaty environment has probably created a perfect place for bacteria or fungi to grow.
I don't mean to imply that your personal hygiene is anything short of exemplary, but paying extra attention to personal freshness eg rinsing it off with fresh water after you pee, and applying the canesten, should hopefully improve the irritation.
Of course consult your GP if you have any concerns 🙂

Hope the yeast infection subsides swiftly @Type-1-Baldy - but like others I’d also suggest booking an appointment to get it checked in case it’s something other than Thrush.

Sounds like a fungal infection I think I had one before diagnosis. I used some generic anti-fungal cream to get rid of it.

I can’t stop chuckling at seeing Winky used in the title to the thread!

Some years ago I suffered with something similar to what you've described and my GP diagnosed it as Balanitis, for which I was prescribed a cream called Eumovate, so it's best you see your GP rather than assume it's an yeast infection as the treatments are different.

OMG @Martin.A 1 Balanitis is indeed nofhing like thrush. The OP has not mentioned any itching though, which is the usual 'outward' sign of that whether you're male or female - though Canesten won't make Balanitis worse, so no harm in trying it, I suppose.

I've just rid of a sore winky, ended up phoning the docs and he prescribed me a clotrimazole cream for a yeast infection, twice a day for two week and all back to normal

I think you can get it over the counter

The thing with Balanitis is the inflammation, so Canesten won't address that. Having said that, many years ago I was prescribed Canesten for a thrush infection but it wasn't in the usual red & white box, it was in a blue & white box. The difference was due to the latter including hydrocortisone.

I would get medical treatment until you know what it is. Best way, can be done by the chemist, over the counter.

If you buy the wrong treatment it won't help.

I had thrush a lot when first diagnosed, its not uncommon, but do go and get it checked out.

Its nothing to be embarrassed about. If you've seen one than you've seen them all. Just body parts to medical people, same as a foot or elbow, they only care about making you feel better. Do use the right term with them though, I know an adult who calls her parts her foofoo 🙄

I know someone who calls it her lady garden

An indicator of thrush in men is the foreskin goes tight, I gave the doctor the details over the phone and he was quiet certain it was thrush because of that indicator. There was no swelling just tightening amongst other factors, as there was tightening the skin was splitting
