In the Garden

This is my Korean Lilac. It only flowers once a year and has a fragrance like no other. Until it's in bloom again, it continually grows. I will re-pot it next Spring to encourage more growth.

What a beautiful shrub.<3 Is it hardy and does it keep it's leaves in winter?
We are planning to replace an old half dead conifer hedge with a mixed shrub hedge so I am always on the lookout for something interesting and a little unusual.

We saw a Burnet moth in our garden the other day, I didn’t have my phone on me, and it had gone by the time i got back, so no pic. They are black with red spots, very handsome, the last time I saw any was on the Pembroke Coast path a few years ago, in a heatwave, maybe they like it hot!
 
I saw some very striking red and black beetles on some wild flowers the other day when I was out for a walk. Long thin bodies but really brilliant scarlet with black on their bodies. Haven't had chance to look them up yet. Probably common as muck but they really caught my eye especially as they were on white hog weed flowers.

They do look quite similar but the deciding factor was the long red marking on the edge of the wing, I looked at a website about how to distinguish the two.

We have loads, they lay their eggs on ragwort and have stripy orange and black caterpillars. Occasionally we get a Red Admiral or Peacock on the buddleia.

I remember as a child seeing loads of cinnabar caterpillars in the fields where we walked the dogs.

We just had a scarlet tiger fly into the house, straight through the kitchen door and through to the lounge window, I managed to trap it in a glass and let it out.

Not as exciting as the above butterflies/moths but we had a cabbage white, borrrring, under the nets yesterday, we had to unclip it all to get it out before it laid eggs in our brassicas. It had got in through a small gap which we’ve fixed. Anyhoo, this is what we were trying to save. After many years of trying, we’ve finally got broccoli! We’re desperately hoping it’ll get a bit bigger and not start flowering. We’re nervous wrecks! Checking it morning and night, and in between. We do have others but this is the biggest. Broccoli is one of our favourite veg and the kids all love it too.

I keep trying broccoli but never with much success as we have club root, I thought I had chosen a spot free of it but no, the plants were hopeless.

Our one and only attempt at broccoli was a disaster. It looked ok but when we harvested it the head was infested with tiny black beetles. Yukky!
 
Six weeks since my begonia gardens + were planted up. This is an arial shot of my front garden, plus two of my most successful pots. The fuchsia wintered over from last year, so I'm particuarly pleased with it.

During the summer months this pretty shrub produces an abundance of of delicate flowers which then turn white. The tiny leaves are unusual coz of their shape along the stems. Unfortunately, it's not evergreen. I only have the one shrub but thinking of buying another two coz I think they would look impressive bunched together.
