Hi, I have a blister on my calf that the skin as come off I'm not able to get in to my doctor's with the state of the appointment at the moment it's been like this for a week it just seems to be leaking all the time and doesn't seem to be healing it's about 5x5cm in size so I've just been putting a new dressing on it at night and then taking it off in the day but it's doesn't seem to be scabbing over at all anyone had one of these before and what can I do to help speed the healing up at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

would your gp surgery give you an appointment with the pratice nurse, if you can't get gp appointment or do you have a local minor injuries at the nearest hospital, if you do they will dress it and refer you back to pratice nurse to carry on treating it, leaving it undressed will make it more susceptible to infection , it ,may already have infection in it. best to get a professional to look at it asap, good luck

I'm going to go up to my minor injuries unit in the morning hopefully they will help me last time I went there with something it just felt like they were being funny with me should I put one of these large dressings I have on for new and take it off before I go up there? In the morning

We are lucky that we have a 'walk in centre' but calling 111 or 111 on line they will pre-book you there if needed or pre-book you in at A&E , you could try that route but it sounds as if it needs attention asap.

Hopefully you put the dressing on. I would leave it on in the morning. Let them take it off to look.

Hopefully you are in A&E now and they have taken a swab to check for infection, dressed it and maybe prescribed a precautionary antibiotic. My issues started with an ulcer smaller than my little fingernail. Fingers crossed all is fine.

Things like that a pharmacist can take a look at & provide advice, did this last year after injuring big toe.

Hi so I thought I would make a update post went to Miu and they checked and dressed it they told me to contact my doctor's and I've been going there for new dressing every week the nurse did take a swab and there isn't a infection there only problem it's not healing and it's leaking all the time I have another appointment for the nurse to redress and she said on my that one that if there.was no progress in the healing process on this one she would be referring me to the tissue department at the hospital I think so this is where I stand at the moment it's bang in the middle of my calf so it's moving all the time with me being on my feet all day while working

I feel for you. Currently I am having three macerated wounds dressed on my foot weekly. The annoying thing is one healed a a new one sprung up! Have you had a Doppler and ABPI check?

oh good to hear from you, i hope the nurse does refer you to a tissue viability nurse, they are usually very good, know there stuff, what dressing is the nurse using,?
the advice i had from a tissue viability nurse was follow a high protein diet it really helps with healing, i think it has with my situation, good luck

My nurse has tried me with a few different ones the problem is I have very sensitive skin so I've had softpore which irritates my skin she also was putting a sliver dressing underneath that but that seemed to make my leg leak even more I've had a dressing that's like a nappy that soaks everything up but then they irritated aswell the only dressing that doesn't seem to irritate me are the clearpore ones but they get full very quickly as they are waterproof ones

A Doppler is a simple device for listening to the blood flow in the arteries. Ask the nurse next time you see the nurse as ass GP practices should have one.

ABPI is Anke Brachial Pressure Index where they compare the BP at your ankle to that on your upper arm. The normal figure is 0.9. Over 1.0 suggests calcification and below that you probably have PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease) where the arteries are narrowing (c.f. CVD - Cardio Vascular Disease). If you have it you really need to take a station. I resisted when first diagnosed with PAD and then only took the minimum. Might still have my lower left leg if I hadn't been so stubborn. Besides lowering cholesterol stations also reduce irritation (variable and high BGs, and smoking are the main causes) and stabilise any existing plaque.
