Hello everyone. In August this year my Doctor told me I was diabetic. My Hbaic was 47 .and my fasting was slightly raised .I immediately started walking and also gave up Carbs .my new reading is 40 . I asked the diabetic nurse can u ease off on the exercise 4 miles a day 5 days week and also could I eat some sweet things. I have been eating potatoes all the time .my readings 2 hours after a meal is 7.2 .the nurse just tells me to keep going. I think maybe shes afraid I will stop everything. Anh help appreciated

Good morning @Toddie1 . Well done on the drop in your HbA1c with the changes you have made to your diet and the increase in levels of activity.

You mention that you have given up carbs and eat potatoes all the time. the press often talk about sugars rather than carbs, and whilst those very tasty sweet things containing sugar are carbohydrates, so are potatoes, and other root veg. It is worth becoming familiar with the amounts of carbs in all that we eat. This include rice, pasta, potatoes. If you could keep a record of the amount of carbs (which can take a bit of head scratching sometimes as there is no consistency in how the information is presented) you can then choose to make swaps to lower carb options and/or reduce portion sizes of those less obvious carbs.

Let us know how you get on

@Toddie1 I am sorry you are not enjoying your exercise and want to cut back. Exercise has many benefits beyond diabetes care so I can understand why your nurse suggested you continue.
If you are finding your walks dull or take too long, maybe consider some other type of exercise such as cycling or dance or gardening or join a walking group for some stimulating discussion during your walks.

Well done on reducing your HbA1C.

@Toddie1 Exercise has less effect on Blood Glucose than what you eat does. There is no actual need to do more than a 30 mon brisk walk 5 times per week (the recommendation of the NHS and what I aim for though I overshoot and so it averages at more than 6 times per week for me).
As has been mentioned earlier, Starchy veg contain carbs, as do fruit as do all types of grains. However your new HbA1C reading of just squeaks into the normal range (i.e. non-diabetic) here in the UK (in the USA you would still be considered 'pre-diabetic' or 'at risk o9f diabetes'. This means that you have a certain amount of flexibility to ease up a little - but just a little!

Thank you that is good advice I will work on that .thanks again

Are you able to get to Aquafit classes? I go 3 times a week, 45 - 55 mins per class and they are great fun, and sociable. Before COVID we would stop after for tea/coffee and I said no to the biscuits. The group also occasionally met up for meals. My DN was quite happy with that amount of exercise.

Thank you that has given me an idea I will look into something similar here

I found exercise was crucial.
As you have found, even eating potatoes is more than compensated for by exercise.
It builds muscle, and dramatically reduces insulin resistance.
However, as said, some members prefer less exercise, and control their BG by simply not eating carbs.
I try to hit the gym at least 5 days a week even though I reversed my diabetes, and eat normally.

Every thing is about finding a balance that suits you.

@Toddie1 as you are eating potatoes, you could just substitute some sweets for whatever amount of carbs you usually eat. If you test a swap of 10 gm of carbs from potato for 10gm of carbs from sweets and check to see how you respond you should be able to see if it is exactly equivalent for you, or not.

Thank you for the reply .I think I will keep doing the exercise .even though I have only lost 2kg from 90kg to 88kg although I do feel better and my waist is smaller .my last reading of 40 is classed non diabetic would that be classed as reversed

I think only after 2 consecutive HbA1C tests without medication below 42mmol/mol would you be counted as in remission. I'm not sure if that is the same as reversed.

It seems ‘remission’ is the current go-to phrase rather than reversal’

There’s a write-up of the recent international consensus on the terminology here:

Welcome to the forum, and well done on your great progress so far!
