Hi guys
Started Metformin today. 500 mg with breakfast about 7 hours ago. Have now got awful stomach cramps and diarrhoea. I also suffer with Diverticulitis. Any idea how long the cramps and diarrhoea will last please? Thank you xx
The normal advice is that it can take a few weeks for your body to adjust to Metformin, but some people cannot take it. The usual advice is to take the pill in the middle of a meal.
I too am a diverticulitis sufferer. I couldn't take the usual Metformin, so asked to be put on the slow release version, Sukkarto. I found I can quite happily take 500mg a day, but started to get the cramps and runs on 1000mg. I tried for a few weeks, but I was doubled up for 9 days. So I have now been put on Canagliflozin, with no additional side effects, and retained the 500gm Sukkarto. I'm not a medical person, but I did wonder if people with existing bowel problems were more likely to have issues with Metformin.
Many can't really cope with the side effects from "standard" metformin so end up going to the modified release version. I'm one of those "many" and I can't tell you how much easier it is being on the modified release version but I'd say give it some time, perhaps a couple of weeks, to see how you tolerate the standard metformin and if it's not good then just ask your GP to switch you over and they'll do it right away usually.
If you have got a reaction so quickly then I'd advise to go straight back to whoever prescribed it to let them know - though I thought that diverticulitis was a contra indication to the use of Metformin.

I'm a diverticulitis sufferer and could not take standard Metformin at all. I was put on slow release Sukkarto and 500mg was fine, but 1000gm bought back the dreadful cramps, constipation and the runs. Now I'm back on 500mg plus a different diabetes medication, I'm fine, and my diverticulitis is behaving itself. So like all things diabetic, I suspect it's a very individual thing.
I was on Metformin Normal 100mg and reduced to 500mg when my Blood Test went to 43.. After over four years I started getting anxiety, Sleeplessness and real problems on the loo front. Had an accident in Leeds High Street three weeks ago. GP put me on 500mg slow release straight after four days on zero meds. I check my BG regularly over the week. Currently on ave 7.5mml. GP will change if your symptoms persist.
