Hi all, now this might be a daft question, but I must admit I am a bit lost at the moment. I have just gone onto insulin, and as a HGV driver, I know that I have to inform DVLA, which I have, and they have sent me a form to return along with my driving licence. Is it therefore, still ok for me to drive my car, and a van at work ? I know I am not permitted to drive HGV until I have 3 months readings and approval from my dr. Thanks

As you have said they have asked for your licence back, until that is returned I would say do not drive if you get pulled over and don't have a license to show, it can become difficult. I would ring DVLA for clarification, and then you know where you stand.

Also, DUK has some wonderful information on driving with Diabetes. I have shared the link here;

We have another member, @DuncanLord who is in the same position, I think he was allowed to carry on driving his car, but hopefully he will see this post and can clarify. Under 'section 88' you are allowed to carry on driving a car whist waiting for a new licence, (obviously not an HGV) provided your doctor hasn’t told you that you are not fit drive, but unfortunately this is also a grey area, and some people have been told that they positively need a note from their doctor saying they can drive.

@Jonesy63
I was allowed to drive car, by the doctors but they waited until DVLA gave me my medical license. Different Doctors may vary and yours may be a little more lenient as you were already living with diabetes before going on insulin. It took DVLA about 7 to 8 weeks to come back with my Class 1. (Car license for 3 years).
Check with your Doctor whether or not you fall into Rule 88.
good luck.
