Some nights I really feel like having 1 or maybe 2 gin and slimline tonics - would this be ok?

I'm sure there are zero carbs in that drink. Some posh tonics do have carbs but not the normal diet/slimline ones.

Have a look in carbs and cals!
You have to be careful with alcohol though, your liver can’t multitask so whilst it is dealing with the alcohol it can’t be sending out it’s usual trickle of glucose into your blood stream, which makes you more likely to go low. My daughter isn’t old enough to drink yet so I don’t have any experience of how to manage this - hopefully someone else will be along soon! I think some people report different effects with different drinks so as with everything you’ll probably have to give it a try, be on your guard for a few hours afterwards and see what happens.

Plain gin and slimline / diet tonic is fine.
Flavoured gins you need to watch out for can have carbs in it.
it’s hard work if you are out unless you see the mixer bottle/can, places think you are being fussy and give full tonic which is a nightmare. But at home you are fine.
Most vodkas are fine too, with diet mixers.
Raspberry vodka, with soda water and a dash of lime juice (a skinny bitch) is very nice too.

Schweppes tonic water has 33g of carbs in it.
How on earth do they manage to get that many carbs in plain fizzy water?
I must be missing something.

ETA. Just had another look. It's all sugar. I thought tonic water had no flavour but I don't drink it so I'm not sure.

Interesting to know for future reference though. I'd have assumed it had no carbs at all.

Surely slimline has zero carbs.

Sorry Gill, I didn't clarify that I was talking about the full fat one.
Didn't mean to confuse you. 🙂
That's ok

How much? Are you planning to drown your gin?😱 😉
Schweppes these days has taken a lot of the sugar out of even full sugar tonic water. For tax reasons, like they did with Lucozade a couple of years ago. It comes in at 4.9g of carb per 100ml these days. A useful amount to counteract the fact that the alcohol is going to inihibit your liver from putting out glucose for a bit (an hour for each unit of alcohol, my old DSN told me. It was one of the first things she told me. I must have looked the type…)

I think you are getting muddled up with Soda Water. Indian Tonic Water is very different and contains quinine and presumably sugar or sweeteners in the slimline version to counteract some of the bitterness.

I'm a fan of gin and slimline tonic or rum and diet cola, although I also enjoy a glass of red or the occasional port.

@mum2westiesGill You will need to be careful with your levels dropping low at night recently as the alcohol can mean that your liver doesn't trickle out as much glucose..... Personally, my liver seems to be the only part of me which is able to multitask and I don't have any signs of alcohol dropping my levels but it certainly can happen to some people.
Maybe just start with a frugal shot of gin and plenty of tonic and see how you get on. It is a shame to miss out on an occasional drink if you used to enjoy it though.

For once I'm not.
It's definitely tonic water. It's apparently 12 oz which is about 350ml.

I was meaning that you were perhaps getting Soda Water confused with tonic as that is plain fizzy water. Indian Tonic Water is totally different and I am well aware it contains sugar or sweeteners depending upon the variety you go for.
FeverTree is the brand that really annoys me because it contains fructose rather than sucrose and many pubs think it is the same as Slimline due to their marketing when it absolutely isn't! And fructose, when ingested without the fibre from fruit, is potentially worse for us than sucrose.

That’s more than half a pint! Thats definitely drowning a gin!
Your link in the reply to @rebrascora is to the US site, I presume they haven’t replaced any of the sugar with artificial sweetener like they have in the U.K., and that 12oz, or 350ml is a US standard portion.😱and you wonder why their obesity problem is worse than ours.

Oh I see. Right OK. I don't drink either hence the confusion.
Thanks for clarifying.

I did wonder if that's what I had done :-D
350ml isn't that bad.
It's what we call a "big cup" in our house.
I couldn't drink that amount of fizzy stuff now though.

I remember when I was a kid of 15. I was at a local stall thing in our village field.
There was a competition. You had to drink a glass of Irn Bru in a one-er to win a prize.
A famously difficult thing to gulp down.

For 5p you could do the half pint challenge (it was during the 1982 World Cup finals).
For 10p you could do the pint.

I paid my 5p because even at that age I wasn't clinically insane.
They poured my drink.
And I went through my pre-drink breathing ritual. "Come on you can do this", "Keep your eyes on the prize", that sort of thing...
They handed me my drink.
It was warm, which meant it was more fizzy.
Jeezo....

I started drinking. After 3 gulps, I felt the back of my throat being stripped away. and I could no longer taste the otherwise delicious beverage.
On the 4th gulp, I started to choke.
On gulp 5, a little bit came out of both nostrils but went straight back into the glass again so they didn't disqualify me.
By gulps 8 and 9 I couldn't see through the tears streaming from my eyes, my ears were pounding and I was beginning to hallucinate. My throat was entirely numb.

2 gulps later and I was finished. I was doubled over in pain. I remember saying "f**k, f**k, f**k,....." quite a lot, which came as a surprise to the vicar who was running the stall.

The words "well done laddie" were uttered by someone watching at the side.
I had stared death in the face but I had succeeded.

I went to ask for my prize, opened my mouth and involuntarily belched for 5 straight seconds.

My prize?

A free half pint of warm Irn Bru. I couldn't even drink it.

Sorry Gill,

I appear to have, yet again, side-railed one of your threads. 😱o_O
Time for bed for me....
