Type 2
Hi. I've recently started putting my type 2 into remission but I am awful for snacking and I'm looking for any recommendations for snacks that are low carb and low fat I can eat without my blood levels spiking. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for replying, I appreciate it, Anitram. I did think about nuts but I have been staying away from them because of the fat content. I didn't realise the fat was the good sort!

Is there any particular reason why they have to be low fat? Most of us find that incorporating fat into our diet as we reduce carbs leads to wanting/needing less snacks and less food in general as the fat takes longer to digest and provides slow release energy so it stops us from feeling hungry.
Most of us find that a boiled egg with a spoon of full fat mayonnaise works well or a few nuts (peanuts are higher in carbs than Brazils or walnuts or hazelnuts) or I like to make some veggie sticks with celery and cucumber and peppers and mushrooms and have them with a real sour cream and chive dip from the chilled counter (not the Doritos stuff in a jar) or even the odd packet of pork scratchings.

I have raised cholesterol levels so I am trying to cut both fat and carbs. I'm currently eating around 1000 calories a day in order to lose weight as well. My diet is predominantly veg based so I was looking for something different and a little more fulfilling.

There is very little evidence that good fats as part of your diet actually convert into cholesterol in the body, indeed the body need cholesterol for all sorts of metabolic processes so as long as you don't go berserk with the fat then some of the things rebrascora suggested should be OK.
Many people have found even increasing fat had reduced their cholesterol and improved the ratios which is also an important thing not just the total.
You may find by increasing the fat in your meals you would find less need and temptation to snack.

Thank you. I will keep this in mind as I try and balance everything.

I’ve just packed my snack to take to work today
1/2 apple chopped with Nuts
a few of each macadami, brazils, almonds & walnuts (I’m eating quite a few seeds & nuts and find them ok)

My cholesterol levels came down when I upped my good fats and lowered my carbs

Raw vegetables???

When I went low carb I ate the fats which came with the foods - meat cheese eggs etc. My cholesterol went down.
Cholesterol is manufactured in the body, not absorbed from food - someone checked using a tracer element, which means that an awful lot of people are trying to lower their cholesterol consumption for no reason.

I was told to cut out all high fat foods like dairy, cut my carbs and calorie intake.

That worked for me.
I cut all fatty foods, actually I didn't specifically cut my carbs, but went on a low calorie diet, so this in itself cut down what I ate.
I had good support from my GP, I still do, and I find saturated fat pushes my cholesterol up, (and overeating puts weight back on)
I still watch the calories, eat low fat, and healthy fat when I do eat it, classic healthy, not dairy, and meat fat! (even lettuce has some healthy fat)
I can't really help with the snacks, I avoided nuts because of the high calories content, my normal go to was carrot sticks.
But it was worth sticking to the diet, I eventually did the Newcastle diet, and reversed my diabetes after losing 5 stone overall.

We need cholesterol for the body to make sex hormones and vitamin D and to help in tissue repair amongst other things.

I have been told that too, lots of times - if it had worked I'd still be 147lb, with a 24 inch waist - but it doesn't, and I'm not.
Sigh.

I had heard that but I wasn't sure how far it was true. Thank you, because I've just researched it. I think I need to tweak things a little bit.

I feel you. I have lost 6 stone, then put another one back on with shielding all year. So February I decided to sort the rest of my weight out. I was doing brilliantly until I had to alter my diet. So I've gone back, pretty much to what I was doing before my annual review. I'm now off my diabetic meds and doing well to avoid blood sugar spikes, and I don't actually need the snacks now while out walking as I don't go hypo.

Ah, but like everything we don't need it in excess.
Blood sugar, we do need some, too little will kill us as well as too much.
We need water, but too much will kill us.
Indeed we do need cholesterol, too much can kill us.
I personally am sticking to the normal NHS guidelines, and from the results of many blood tests, for me, fat does indeed push my cholesterol into high figures that I personally don't want.
As said, my body makes the cholesterol it needs, however, it also absorbs cholesterol, (or possibly creates extra) from cholesterol raising foods, this I intend to limit by not eating that food in the first place.

And with weight loss like you have had, and having come off meds, the only thing I could say is keep doing what you have been doing, it clearly works amazingly well!
Congratulations on those results.

Thank you, I appreciate your advice and kind words.

It also seems that those who do not have a low cholesterol level, live longer - but as cholesterol forms part of our immune defences, it isn't really all that surprising that cholesterol can help with survival into old age.
