Yes - basal. Waste of time mostly tweaking mealtime jabs if the background insulin or those dose(s) thereof aren't holding your BG steady in between.

As has already been asked - what basal insulin does he use in addition to the Fiasp? Most insulins only suit some people and not others, for the simple reason all our bodies are different.

Worth looking at.

I suspect my basal (Levemir twice daily) is generally fine (though I need to decrease it a little now probably because it's colder), but I suspect it's not quite enough in the evening, probably because I'm a bit less active/alert then.

During the night I'm pretty constantly not active, but during the day I'm working, so even when I'm just sitting working I'm at least alert. But then there's this few hours when I'm much more relaxed. I guess it mattered less before March because I walked to and from work, and went out dancing a couple of nights a week; I was generally more active (and a little lighter).

If I were on a pump I could just up the rate a little to cover that, but just with MDI I think using a bit more bolus makes sense even if I believe the problem's partly really basal.

@Bruce Stephens - stop suspecting ie guessing, when you can do a basal test to actually check properly! Have your main meal at lunchtime instead of evening and something lighter in the evening and earlier if you can - and test test test once approx 4 hrs past meal bolus is more or less finished. Hardly onerous, esp if you use Libre.

I was going to "Like" your comment.
But I can't split the comment.
I agree/like your comment about being able to put on weight without eating unhealthily.

But liking the whole comment seems like I like your eating disorder. I hope you are ok now.
I'm not fully over it but I do eat more carbs these days so getting there, thank you 🙂 xx

I would also guess at not enough basal being Joe's problem.
Joe probably wont like it but I would suggest skipping an evening meal and testing every hour or two so he can see what is going on.

General rule of thumb though is not to eat until bloods below 8, so that could also be a factor in things.

Today, I broke that rule and ate when I was already at 9.1.
To compound my error, I also injected into my thigh for the first time.
I sometimes check my bloods 2 hours later but something made me check after an hour.
I had gone to 12.7 which is high but the increase from pre-meal was reasonable. I then tested again 30 minutes later and I was at 17.5 and clearly hyper. I felt drunk, happy, full of energy and a bit unsteady on my feet. I grabbed my coat and went out for a long walk, getting totally soaked right down to my underwear.
An hour and 3 miles later I squelched back into the house and was back at 6.9 so hugely relieved.

3 lessons learned.
Don't eat when I am above 8.
Leave more time between bolus injection and eating.
Injections in the thigh take longer to activate than those in either my abdomen or my perfectly formed peach-like buttocks.

ETA. Also learned that when I feel happy and completely pain-free, I am probably running high glucose levels. When I am feeling tired and in pain, my levels are spot on. How hilariously cruel is that? 😛
