Do you mean the type of Diabetes known as MODY? Which has strong genetic links? If so, Exeter University is the specialist centre for research into all the different Mody types, so googling Mody or Exeter University, or typing MODY into the search box on here, (click on the magnifying glass symbol, top right hand corner of every page) might lead you somewhere.

Hi Ive been type one diabetic since the age of 11 and Im 31 now and always had problems controlling blood sugars I just spoke to my diabetes nurse this morning and she mentioned something about genetical diabetes so was trying to find out as much info as I could

she said she going to look into my genetics first by emailing a few people and shed get back to meet in a week as it could take her a while, she just found it strange that iv never been able to control my diabetes and the fact that my nanna was type 2 1st then I was diagnosed with type 1 then years later my mum dad and younger brother got type 2 , also the fact that I am injecting 1/2 unit of novorapid to 10g carbs and my sugars are dropping rapidly and only taking 6 units of tresiba nightly its very confusing and hard to deal with

The actual genetic MODY testing is expensive so they might do some initial blood tests first eg C Peptide and the Type 1 antibodies testing. The answers to those will help them decide whether you need additional tests to look for MODY.

I only take a small amount of basal insulin too and I had MODY ruled out. Keep an open mind and just go with it 🙂

Hi. I think there is confusion about this. Everyone's DNA is different and some Genes make you more susceptible to diabetes and specific forms. This might be because you are subject to antibody attack or you have had a virus etc. So, I don't believe there is such a thing as 'Genetic' diabetes.

That’s not correct @DaveB There are monogenic forms of diabetes, also known as MODY or genetic diabetes.

These are different to the ‘normal’ diabetes genes that put you at risk of Type 1.

Yes that’s my understanding too @Inka

If I remember right running tests to confirm monogenic forms of diabetes were the ‘extra tests‘ that the 2015 NICE Guidelines supported
